my friend asked me why the xbox360 console costs so much. that got me to thinking about the older consoles. i got nes much later then other ppl, so i don't know how much that costed at launch. i remember when snes, genesis, and turbo gfx16 came out, but i don't remember the prices. was it $200 or $300? anyone remember?

NES was i *think* $129.99 for the big bundled package (console, 2x controllers, mario game, duckhunt, lightgun, etc) back in 1986.

SNES was $149.99 or $129.99 can't remember which when it first came out.

N64 was $149.99 when it first came out.

BTW, Costed is not a word, it's just cost. "how much did the consoles cost..."

Pretty sure the sega genesis was released for $200 then dropped to $190 shortly after that. I can't remember what the NES was originally.

i could have sworn snes was 199.00 - i remember my brothers and sister and myself were saving all our new year's money to pool together to buy it.... hmm maybe that was to get the game also.

i don't think snes was $150 at launch, becuz i'm pretty sure sega genesis was $200... i would think they would have them priced about the same. i remember there was an atari console that was competing with sega and nintendo... forgot the name. it wasn't the 2600... but i think it was a number based name. 😕

i remember when i bought my sega... i think i had a deal where i buy the console and i got a game free (air buster) via mail. i rode my bike like 3 miles to buy the sega and i had a hell of a time holding on to that huge ass toys r us bag and trying to keep my hands on my handlebar.

Maybe you're thinking of the Turbografx 16 (which I don't think was Atari)?

btw, turbo gfx 16 was made by nec, right?

yes it was. so was turbo cd, turbo duo and turbo express

damn, i didn't know they released that many systems.
sega nomad was the coolest handheld 😎

N64 was $200

Considering what hardware is inside Xbox 360, it's a good price. It has a video card ~= 7800 GTX, 512 MB of RAM (faster than typical PC system RAM), 3 core 3.2 GHz power PC processor.

The HDD is crappy, and it's not standard which prevents developers from taking advantage of it for fear of dividing a userbase. The disc drive does not have ideal capacity for certain types of games. It actually has less space than Xbox does for some reason.
