Yeah, many of you recommended a MMORPG, but I don't like those. An oblivion-like single player RPG is what I want, but in space! :)

Someone on this forum must work for EA games or something...MAKE THIS GAME! NOW!

Found my copy last night and reinstalled it. My saved games from 2003 were still there :D. I installed the Tekagi's Treasure mod, which adds a bunch of systems, weapons, and ships. It's primarly a multiplayer mod, but you can play in single player, and I spent a bunch of time flying around exploring last night.

Great game.

I just got around to loading it up again, got the urge to fly around some more from this thread. Runs great on my Opty 165.

Great game.

Yup, play it 5-6 times a week online with my X2 3800.

To answer the original question by Markbnj - Yes you can run Freelancer on an AMD X2. I had a problem with it on my setup (randomly crashes when going through jumpholes) and was able to straighten it out simply by disabling 3d sound under the audio menu.

Now - here is a question for all you Freelancer enthusiasts out there who are on the cutting (bleeding) edge of technology:

Has anyone been able to do Multiplayer Freelancer using Windows Vista 64 bit yet? FL seems to work beautifully under Vista (yes on my X2 4200+) but when I attempt to get online with it to get some multiplayer time in, it simply tells me (almost instantly) that the server(s) stopped responding or there is internet problems. Doesn't matter which server - I get the same thing. I can browse the server list just fine, it only chokes when I attempt to *connect* to a server. I've already tried disabling the firewall - that didn't help.

Suggestions? Comments? Solutions? Any would be appreciated......

Thanks,

Ax

For any of you who liked Freelancer, you should try the Darkstar One demo. Darkstar One is a new game that, imo, looks pretty much like Freelancer's successor. It has almost all of the same features Freelancer had such as open ended play, trading, and the same "dynamic" look that Freelancer had. Graphics seem pretty much like X3 but the voice acting is horrible compared to Freelancer

DSO is pretty decent, but I'm afraid that I won't be buying it when it hits the shelves for the simple fact there is *no* multiplayer option at all. Online is where its at these days, and if a game doesn't support online gameplay then its just not worth buying to me. X3:Reunion is a decent game also, and has fantastic graphics, but no multiplayer - so it limits itself.

Thats why I keep going back to FreeLancer. Multiplayer action online with your friends and other hundreds of people (The Void 2112 Mod) is a lot of fun.

they did already and it lasted 1 year....
it was called "Earth and Beyond" and Westwood made it...

was a fun game but EA crapped on it.. and killed it like thier other MMOs

I'm having a real hard time understanding why the game companies can't see how popular oblivion was and how popular sci fi games are, so shouldn't a combination sell brilliantly?

A game already in development from the creator of kotor , NWN , Blauder gates. Its called mass effect exclusive for the xbox 360 and the most good looking RPG at E3 2006.

Thanks for the heads up, I may have to get a 360 for that game but I'll hold out a little hope that it appears for PC.

I just played the Darkstar One demo, major resemblance to Freelancer. I thought the voice overs were fine.

Hmm I oughta try Darkstar One...

I kinda enjoyed Freelancer. I also tried X3 and had alot of fun playing that but I was a little annoyed by some of the quirks/bugs in the game. But what I really didn't like about X3 was the combat system- it felt so limited and boring.

I was a big PRivateer 2 fan but I just couldn't get back into it anymore after playing the newer games

One game I am surprised not mentioned is Independence War 2! It was not as robust as X3 in terms of owning various space stations but it's piracy was alot better and the combat system was phenomenal. I have yet to play a space sim with a more fun combat system...

Eh, maybe I'm being picky, but you can definately tell it was made in German then translated.

"landing permission was granted" being one of the big ones.

Yeah, you are being picky. I didn't mind at all, I'm glad the characters have accents...makes it more interesting/dynamic.

I liked Freelancer's story despite the rushed ending and the huge universe had a lot of potential, but the game was generally too easy and got boring quickly after the story missions ended. And the voices were ridiculously repetitive. I must have heard that inane "We don't really run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do" like a hundred times.

By the way, if any of you are interested in space sims in general, Freespace 2 is now free and is simply a must play game, especially with all the enhanced graphics and stuff that has been added since the source code was released. You can get the things here and someone there can direct you on how to set everything up.

I wasn't meaning the accents. It just sounds gramattically odd in some places.

Heh, I would definitely have to agree that Freelancer's voice acting leaves a bit to be desired, but for a different reason. It uses this system where it has a bunch of pre-recorded voice clip for the various non-storyline characters, and it basically strings them together to make a phrase. Unfortunately, it's far from seamless. I lost track of how many times I wanted to pull my hair out after hearing "Freelancer...alpha...one...dash...one...You have been granted permission to dock at...docking port...two" or something similar. I'm seen this system used to much better effect in some other games.

Has anyone successfully made freelancer widescreen ... and playable? I went over to widescreengamingforums and they have an outline for how to do it but there is a required modded file, cameras.ini that while linked to is no longer hosted. Anyone have the modded file? Thanks.

Edit: got it modded correctly and the file is hosted again on the link available through widescreengamingforums, life is good.

Hmm got nostalgic and just installed Freelancer last night. Played through a couple of the early missions just to get refreshed since it's been about 3 years since I've touched the game.

Thinkin of startin up multi tonight. Might try out this Void 2112 mod as it seems to be one of the more popular ones. Any thoughts on that?

I'll be connecting from East Coast, US.
