UPDATED 2 ABOUT PROTECTIVE CASES

I know that they make little cases that you can put your cameras in. I saw some little leather ones on Amazon.com and some others. I was just wondering if anyone has one and if they could redommend it. I just want to get one that I know is a good one.

I also don't want it to be bulky as I want the case to mainly protect the camera while it's in my pocket.

UPDATED AND NOW HAVE THE SD1000

I'm wondering what speed SD card I should get so that the camera, when taking pics as fast as it allows in a row, that will keep up with the camera when it writes to the card.

I haven't done this kind of research in years so it may be that all cards now a days will keep up, but I figured I'd ask here first, thanks.

ORIGINAL POST

I currently have a Canon A510. I love my camera but I also want to get another camera. There are a few things about my camera that bug me currently.

- It's size - it's not too big but I like the smaller ones better now.
- It's time between photos - it seems that I have to wait like 4-5 seconds after taking 1 picture before I can take another one.

Other than that I enjoy my camera. I know the pictures aren't the best but they are definitely good enough quality wise for what I need.

I plan on keeping my A510 for a strictly underwater camera. I have the underwater housing for it and I plan on pretty much keeping it in there. I am going on vacation in about 2 weeks and would like to order another camera early next week.

Here is pretty much what I'm looking for.

1. Small and compact camera.
2. Miminal time between taking photos so I can snap a bunch in a row.
3. Good picture quality (duh :p)
4. Doesn't necessarily have to be like 1 million mega pixels, but atleast 3 (which mine is now I believe).
5. Looking to spend between $150 and $200.
6. I'm leaning towards Canon just because I have never really had a problem w/mine, and when I did Canon service was fantastic. I would like to steer clear of sony as well because I've had bad experience w/them in the past and would prefer a non-proprietary media format.
7. Looking for mini-SD type of memory card.
8. Would prefer that it takes batteries instead of a battery pack.

Well I think that's it. I've somewhat checked out the Canon powershot series but I was just wondering if people have any more input on that camera or any other recommendations, as well as sample photos. Thanks!

Canon SD1000, Fuji F31d...those would be my only two choices.

BTW, you should try SimpleViewer for your gallery software. Or at least something that loads pictures silently in the background. It takes forever you browse your galleries with the loading times.

Yah I was just messing w/the web gallery creations in photoshop. The godaddy webhosting being very slow doesn't help either heh.

I also just edited my post stating that I would prefer one that takes batteries over a battery pack.

The slim/small pocket-size digicams all have battery packs.

Any that are SD compatible will let you use mini/micro-SD with an adapter. Few to none use mini/micro-SD natively.

Canon SD1000 - if you think the 510 is too big, you won't like the fuji either. . .

Yah i didn't think it was TOO big really, just I figure if I'm going to et a new one get one that is more compact because it definitely didn't fit into my pocket as slim as I would like one to now a days.

Ended up getting the SD1000 yesterday at circuit city for $180 :)

Deal was too good to pass up :)

Now I'm trying to sell my A510 and underwater housing, and if I can, I'm going to get the underwater housing for my SD1000.

Otherwise I'm going to keep my a510 as a strictly underwater camera.

$180!?!? damn... I hate being an early adopter... I made a terrible impulse buy w/ my SD200... full price 0% APR... heh. I mean, I still use it and it's great... but full price was >2x retail of the SD1000 :(

Yah it was $219 on the website for circuit city and I took the $40 off coupon off a $199 or more purchase and they honored it :)

Now my next question ... what speed SD card do I need in order for the memory card to be able to write as fast as the camera can take pics?

Looking at the specs of the SD1000, it can only shoot up to 1.7 FPS. With that in mind, you could probably go with any SD card and it will be able to keep up with the maximum shooting speed of the camera.

awsome man, thanks for the info. One I'm looking at is 9Mb/sec and yah like you said, if it can only do 1.7fps, it should keep up no problem at that rate :)

I have a Canon S400 (2-3 years old). I had a small nylon/cloth case to store it that I got from a local electronics store for when traveling or when not in use, but I would just slip it into my pocket when going out with the camera. I don't even use the case anymore as I have a larger camera bag to store my Rebel XT and lenses with room to spare for the S400 when it isn't in use.

This is the one I'm looking at

Has pretty good reviews from the amazon user reviews, but I am going to check around first still.

you know, I use an old APS film ELPH leather sleeve. Works nice for scratches, but found dust still easily gets in eventually. So I stopped caring.. and just put it in my pocket. It's usually on it's own anyway.

Altho, not sure where you can find anything like that anymore.. in fact, I don't know where mine even is anymore... but just an idea to throw out there. maybe a jewelers pouch? I find most of the cases for the cameras to be too bulky to get into my pocket
