One of my free emails received this junk. 26705-i386-update.exe

Not only I avoid being on MS's list of anything, but this is the first time I heard of MS wasting bandwidth on email instead of having the drolls go their website to download something.

Which means it's a virus.

So does anyone know anything about this? Sorry if this has been discussed already, I'm out of town.

dont run it.. someone else had a similar email come in. It seems someone in russia is trying to fool people into running the update.

It was pretty hot a topic 2 days back.

Thanks.

No I wouldn't run it. Just making sure others knew about it too.

Thanks for letting me know that it has been talked about already.

I already sent it to Microsoft, here is their reply:

Caution -- Individuals not associated with Microsoft may have delivered
an email to you with a potential virus infected attachment. You may see
the sender as support@microsoft.com. However this email is indeed a
known hoax. Microsoft does not send unsolicited updates to customers in
the form of executable email attachments. A solicited update will also
include an End User License Agreement for verification.

You may want to turn off any features that automatically launch the
programs you download or that automatically open e-mail attachments. Be
aware that although an e-mail cannot infect your computer, if you open
an infected executable attachment from that email message, it can infect
your computer. We recommended deleting the email to ensure the safety
of your computer.

I am also including links to some helpful information on security and
viruses:

Thanks to those of you who brought this to our attention. We apologize
for any inconvenience.
