I just recently found out I may be 1/8 Cherokee. Is anyone a Cherokee and receives money from their casino earnings?

Sorry if I sound greedy, but extra money is always welcome.

I think by default you're now too much of a white devil to do this.

In my fruitless google searches I did notice that some tribes pay to people who are 1/12 or more. I could not find info about Cherokees in particular, though.

I think you have to be more then 50% native american. Otherwise the white part will just take the money from the native part and give him beads and small pox infected blankets.

Do you have a Cherokee owned casino in your vicinity? If not, then i'd say you are out of luck.

Call up the closest Cherokee tribe leader/office. They'll probably laugh at you, but you'll get a better answer than you will here.

I have no idea how you go about getting a piece of that pie but I did taxes for a woman who had $18,000 in income from that. That's per year...not bad for just being born.

I really don't think you should get anything for being 1/8 Cherokee. I mean, come on now. Just because your great-grandfather was Cherokee doesn't really give you strong ties to a native american heritage.

Besides, I thought you had to be at least 1/4 in order to get any money; and a 1/2 or more to receive substantial money.

I live in indian territory and my wife is part cherokee. You don't get any money from them, but if you have a CDIB card, They will help you with tuition for college and you get free medical and dental, prescriptions etc.... They will build you a home for a really low payment, based on your income. A few other things they have available, but as far as I know they don't give you squat from casino earnings. Too bad I am not cherokee, I have an abcessed tooth and could use some pain killer right about now.

I'm not sure the Native Americans are getting much from their casino endeavors. Most had no idea of how to run a business, and so I think these matters have been left to outside management concerns, who are probably robbing them all blind.

We have a casino near us, and I really don't think the tribe has been enriched as much as most of us would imagine. I feel the Nevada company who helped them set up the casino, has used them as a tool to come in and do something they would not be able to do under Nevada regulation...like run a rampant quantity of slot machines with custom made chips, that don't pay.
Meanwhile, I don't believe the Tribe's standard of living has improved in the proportions that most felt it would. The Nevada mob is still alive and well.

I have a cousin who is half NA, though I don't know what tribe she's a part of. I do know her mother got a monthly check while she was growing up, and I believe she had quite a bit of her college tuition paid for.

I also knew a guy who was full blooded (if I recall correctly) Dakota Sioux who was getting about $300K a year from his tribe's casino. That worked out pretty nicely for my wife and I, considering she was dancing at the time and he'd usually spend $1000/wk on her. :p

As for what 1/8 gets you, if it's anything it's probably not going to be much.

You have the amazing privilege of marking "Native American" on your college apps and getting in pretty much anywhere - that's not enough for you?

Yeah, I think college tuition is the most common benefit. One of my roommates in college was 1/4 (I think) N.A. - he actually lived on a reservation in S. Florida. He got ~$15K/year in tuition and stipends...at the time his costs were probably $4K/year. He had a nice car and about $5K in car stereo equipment :).

My Great Grandmother was full blooded Cherokee. I live not TOO far from a Cherokee reservation that homes a Casino.

Would I like free money, sure.....do I think I deserve it, NO.

I believe anyone living there on the reservation, or directly tied to it deserves that money, and no one else. For me to take a chunk means I'm taking away from another who likely needs it more than me.

Don't be a greedy bastage.

You can't get anything. That is a 100% no. Cherokee are very strict with their requirements.

You need to apply for a member card of the tribe you are from. Different tribes have different rules. You may need to have a quarter or eighth Indian blood to be a member. It varies. I'm half Osage and have mine and do receive a small check for the oil and minerals the government takes from Osage nation.
