Anyone read Black Hawk Down?

I'm a huge WW2 buff and have read several Ambrose books (D-Day, Band of Brothers, etc). I've seen BHD several times, but never have gotten around to reading the book. Based on the reviews at Amazon, it appears it would be a pretty good read, especially if you enjoy the war genre.

Ive reread it about 30 times...I love it

I have also watched the movie tons of times, have the PC game, and written to some of the soldiers...

I also read In The Company of Hereos by Michael Durrant, the BHD pilot who was shot down, read the official MOH citations of Gary Gordon and Rany Shugart...and the new book that a couple of the soldiers themsevles wrote...

You will love it trust me! its a good long, but very enjoying read...

You could say i am a BHD freak 😉

That book is supposed to be the less technical account...Michael Durant wrote a more second by second account of everything from his point of view. Black Hawk Down is quite good...

does the book follow the movie basically? Like. I know they are all based on the same event...but from what perepective is the book taken from? Are the characters in the movie all made up or were they the real names of people?

Well, I'm kinda hoping the book(s) give more detail into the background of the situation, and not just accounts of the fighting.

Based on what I've found on the internet, the movie had all the real names of those involved.

yes they are the same names...everything is pretty much the real thing, expcept for they had to edit out past details and things for times sake and different people are in different chalks just to compress everything and make it easier to follow...but you will not be disspaointed by it, even if your ead the book first...I recomend reading the book first then the moive, but either one is awesome...

Also as some said lol black burn fell out becuase an RPG was shot at them...its not in the book, but its in one of the official tapes from the spy plane overhead that you can now download....some how though it is in the movie, but it did not happen exactly like that...

Also In the Company of heroes is an awesome book like i stated in my previous post...but it is just what happened to micheal durrant and goes day by day with what mostly what happened to him....black hawk down also is technical in some parts and gives a lot of wanted info, and then following it up with durrants book reveals some more interesting info and some pics and things...

the recently released book by some of the rangers is alright, its a good read if you liked BHD and durrants, but it seems a little rushed...

Anyways read them all and get the BHD delux edition DVD, all of them are well worth it, and as a huge fan I was not dispaointed by the money i spent....the extra features in the DVD like the hisory channels documentary, (which still airs sometimes) and some other cool stuff and deleted scenes that were in the book and not in the movie is very cool....

I have the book and the movie. Well written, good book.
Also check out "In the Company of Heros" written by Michael Durant, the guy who was captured by the Somalis.

Good book.....err... i think I read the book. I found a website that said it was all the chapters so I read that. If only the Clinton Administration had allowed the use of M1 tanks, it would've saved a few lives.

Book is awesome. It's hard reading it as a soldier and someone who knew some people that were actually there. I found it to be a quick read, but very worthwhile. Too many people take for granted what it takes to go into combat and be shot at, this book does a good job of rationalizing the simple and yet completely complex methods of modern warfare. The seeming inhumane and callous decisions and acts during combat are depicted well in the book. I believe that it can be read online for free if you search around.

I too read the book and recommend it. I am actually reading it through a second time now b/c seeing it on TV lately got me in the mood to read it again. Tragic yet heroic story.

As for the names of the people in the movie, I remember reading that one of them (in the movie) is more of a compilation character because the actual guy was convicted of child molestation later. I don't recall which character or which guy that is (could probably Google, but I'm lazy).

Very good book though.

Haven't read the book or seen the movie, I did show the documentary to my students in American History class though and they really liked it.

the D-boys names are changed of course...forgot to add that..the main characters who were in the book names are the same....but sometimes you have one guy who did that things of 3 people...

also in the movie Grimes is actually Stebbins...
