Anyone playing The Bards Tale?

It was just released on PC and I am trying to step in to RPGs and decided to take the first step with this title.

So far I like it but I can't seem to get the character to use a sword (the one given to him in the beginning). When I play without weilding the sword, the Bard dies easily and lacks the firepower needed to kill some of the monsters. Does anyone know how I can make him weild the sword?

In case you didn't realize it, this one is really a spoof / parody of real RPGs, so it might not be the best one to start with.

I know, I know enough about RPGs to get the jokes but I have never played them.

I played it a little on the PS2. It's okay but not what I was hoping for when I read the previews. I expected much more.
