Fun?

Well..

Some people consider pain to be a sexual stimulant.

Rugby is American football w/o helmets or pads of any kind. If you're not at least 5'10" 190 pounds, you're gonna get your ass handed to you.

The ex-president of my club was something like 5'6" and 165 lbs...but he was one of the scariest guys on the team...size isn't everything, especially when there are 15 positions in rugby, and for about half of them (the backs) you don't have to be uber-huge.

That is a common misconception. One of my roommates plays Rugby for the University so I'm around rugby players on a daily basis, and many of them are smaller than me. You're right though, your ass will be handed to you lol. The guys smaller than me are vicious on a level I can't even begin to explain, they can flat out run over people twice their size and are so fvcking quick if you blink you'll miss something.

I never knew much about rugby before I came to college and now I can't get enough of it. I'm not one to brag but I've been around the party scene more times than I can count and the rugby parties are also the craziest by far. Many rugby guys are the ones who would/deserve to be on the football team but drink and party too much so they can't bother to even try to play. I've been to rugby parties where they've gone through 15+ kegs in a group of people the size as at any other party they wouldn't be able to get through 5. Not that alcohol is everything, but let me say that the rugby team is like a brotherhood in that they're all fairly crazy, all genuinely nice guys, and all will wreck the sh!t out of any single person who talks sh!t on anyone on the team or their close friends. Even the rookies who come out and suck take hell at practice, are talked sh!t upon, are hit harder to make them want to quit, but if anything happened to them at anytime, or they came to anyone on the team for help it would be a masacre... every single person on the team would come to their aid. Its rediculous to be honest.

I don't want to sound like I'm pitching a sale for the rugby team, the one you join probably isn't the same, but if I had a chance I'd join. A lot of players keep asking me to join but I feel like it is a waste of time because I have no experience and I'm already a junior now so I would get no playing time. Even so, just today I was at the gym and a guy on the rugby team saw me and came up and said he knew I was moving in to my new townhouse tomorrow and offered to come help me move in. Rugby players aren't the softest around the edges to say the least, but they have a lot of heart, huge balls, and once you're in its a good time. Everytime I go out to party I'd rather it was a rugby party rather than anywhere else.

Which country are you looking to play in?

This makes a difference because of how different countries percieve the game. Anywhere that it is a game supported by the masses (NZ, Aus, SA, Eng, Wales, etc....), you should look to start playing ASAP. They have lots of programs for people to join, learn the game and be safe at the same time.

Other countries tend to bring pre-conceived notions to the game that can make it much more dangerous. Americans, for example, largely think that it is football with no pads. This is a dangerous concept because (having played both) football is an impact game and rugby is a tackle game. Americans tend to try to play football on the rugby field. Their tackles are "hits". When they run, they try to get every last inch (even if it means losing possession on the ensuing breakdown). In general, Americans just don't have the fundamentals of the game down (since they weren't instilled in them from youngsters). Having been here for the last 3 years (being involved in rugby for all of them), I have seen many more injuries (including to myself) here then I ever did anywhere else. There are lots of factors for this, but one of them is definitely how the game is played here.

I've played Rugby Union for 6yrs. I was scouted to play for a Rugby 'Leauge' team. I played a few games of League but the travel was too much.

I love Rugby but don't play now a days as I OL too much.

Great sport.

Size isn't everything as I use to play 5"10 and be about 160lbs! I was scouted because I was fast and I would tackle like no other. If you can run 'moderately' fast and your not scared to tackle 'properly'. None of this BS grab his shirt and swing him down stuff. Tackle in hard with your shoulder and drive him up so he is off his feet. Once he is off his feet he is yours to dump. OR drive up and in to his hands and try to knock the ball out. That is the 'knew' style of tackling in England.

Or at least get your hands around him then slide down to his feet. He'll fall over if you have your hands around him at his feet :D

Oh yeah if your scared or don't like getting knocked out the sport is NOT FOR YOU. Do play if it you don't like getting dumped about by bigger guys or SMALL guys. They'll still mash you either way.

If you don't mind contact and you like tackling people then the sport is for you.
