Anyone play Monster Hunter and how is it on PSP (PSVita download)?

Heard a bit from a Japanese friend about Monster Hunter and noticed I can download it for my Vita (it's a PSP title). Is it worth getting into? I'm not sure I can find people who will join up to take down some monsters in the game and all like he says happens ad-hoc in Japan regularly.

I am told there's no story to be found and aside from collecting loot not really much point to the game but he assures me it's fun and wildly popular to get together with a couple people and help out the new guy beat that Wyvern or whatnot.

Anyone have experience with this game on PSP or any other platform for that matter that can help me decide if it's for me and if I should consider spending the $20 on it.

Maybe no fans on these forums. Probably one I should just look past if this is any indication of the popularity or general quality of such a game on the PSP.

Still if anyone happens to read this thread and plays it or has spent some time with it I'd like your feedback good or bad.

I loved monster hunter on psp! My two cousins got me into it with freedom 2 and I eventually spent 800 hours playing it until i moved onto freedom unite, which I played for another 300.

It's a great series to play with others. You can even play with others online through the ps3. Although, I spent the majority of my time playing solo.

Cool now I wanna know a few things.

Is it like pokemon that you capture them and use them to fight or do you upgrade your character and fight them for the loot? Also is there any story, just a weak one or is there none? Lastly if someone really could not find people to any with would playing the game solo be missing out in a big way?

It isn't like Pokemon at all. You fight monsters to take pieces from their carcass to make armor and weapons. You'll find yourself fighting the same monster over and over to get rare pieces that are required to make the good stuffto be able to fight other monsters.

There really isn't a story. It's all about looting and crafting, which makes it so addicting.

You could definitely play it solo. Sometimes it'll be easier because others might ruin the hunt, but the hunt will take longer on your own. I suggest watching monster hunter guides in YouTube because this game has a steep learning curve.

This game isn't for everyone. So if you find that you can't stand the grind don't feel bad and move onto the next game in your backlog 😉.

Right now I'm waiting for the next one to come out on the 3ds. I didn't play the one for the Wii and am itching for another one as it's been awhile since I've played unite.
