A group of co-workers and I just started a new D&D campaign playing the latest 3rd edition rules. It's a bit different from the complex and constraining 2nd edition world, but I think I like it. I appreciate the application of skills and feats; it allows your character to assume a certain personality pretty easily. I play an Elf Ranger and with his high dexterity score of 18, I've picked and successfully use a few Rogue-centric skills like Hide, Move Silently and Spot. My character feels like an offensive force, as well, because Rangers wearing light or no armor can have two attacks per round without a two-weapon penalty. The dexterity bonus makes my character deadly with a ranged weapon.

It's also about time that D&D uses an armor class system whose points go up as you gain protection. No more THAC0!

We just started playing 2 weeks ago, so I'm getting back into the groove of roleplaying and learning the rules better. It's funny that the players in our campaign are all in their mid-20s thru early-30s. I don't think kids today really care for roleplaying...is it too 70s for them? I love D&D...it's a great time-burner and an escape from the real world.

The thrid edition rules are better in my opinion, though not without flaws, combat is faster and easier, though my bard lost all of his offensive spells (read fireball and lightning bolt) though gains some nice abilities. Rangers got the short end of the stick in my opinion, all of their abilities for most part are all in the frst level, there was a letter in the most recent dragon (I think, it was pretty recent at least, I believe it was the halfling issue), that gave some tips for making the ranger better. If you have any other questions about rules or anything, pm me I don't mind helping.

Ah sh*t, I loved THAC0. Looks like I'm gonna have to borrow the 3rd Edition rules from my friend and check em out.

You do realize that they keep changing the rules so that they can sell more books, don't you?

Heh...changing rules about every, oh, 10 years? Nah. I imagine the good binding, full color pages and the art helped more there (and I think they had a reason or three from their marketting guys on why they should take "advanced" off).

It is kinda nice to have players actually pause for a bit to decide what to do about a simple orc or troll...

Just be careful...with lower scores yielding the bonuses they do, combat can be quite nasty, esp. at low levels.

Rangers, Monks, and Bards aren't near as versatile as fighters, and typically are far worse when ambushed, but if you can plan for just a round or two, they rock.

oooo...ranger/shadowdancer ::runs off to make an NPC::
