I consider myself a guitar player, but I'm "holding" a bass guitar for a friend and I've had the greatest time playing it!
Should have picked one up along time ago!
A bass guitar has 4 strings (it's missing the 2 higher pitched strings), and is tuned 2 octaves lower (is it two or one, I forget?). To be tuned lower it uses heavier strings and has a slightly longer neck (most people won't notice the neck unless side by side, but they will notice the thicker strings). Traditionally the bass is also played with your figers instead of a pick.
There is also an upright bass which is often seen in orchestras although it is basically an acoustic bass guitar. These basically look like 6 foot tall violins.
