i just picked up a bass guitar w/amp for free and would like to know if there's any tips, or online sites that can teach you the basics.

strings from left to right are E, A, D, G
each tine (shiny metal bars going across the neck) is a half-step up.
4 strings of bass = bottom 4 strings of guitar, except an octave lower.

the 5th tine (or the second dot) is the same note as the next string up

all I started with was the first 3 lines, and I did fine. pretty easy to pick up the bass, but you're going to have to deal with a few blisters the first weeks.

yup, i got all the strings and notes down on a paper diagram, but i'm looking more for technique.

do you pluck each string with thumb?
which strings are held down with which fingers?
etc.

Tips? Give the bass to me! My baby was stolen a little over a month ago. 🙁

no, you wont be using your thumb until you start getting into some funky sh!t.

some good sites are:

ActiveBass
TalkBass
Harmony Central's Bass Division
Bass Lobster

As far as basic technique, there are a few different methods. The most common is resting the thumb of your right hand on top of the pickup and then plucking the strings with your index and second (sometimes third and fourth too) fingers. Go to those sites, they have excellent beginners lessons.

btw, what kind of bass and amp?

i dun really know. it says Squire by Fender (P-BASS) on the guitar and the amp says Squier BP-15
it was free so i don't care if it sucks. its good enuf for a n00b like me.

here's a site recommended by a friend.

i love playing my bass... Chili Peppers have a lot of good bass lines, also the Beatles surprisingly.... Go with what feels comfortable.... Start out slow, learn scales, and then youll be able to rock out.

i wish i could get a free bass. I am so torn, i dont know whether to get a bass or a 52 tele reissue over the summer. Always wanted a 52 tele, but it sucks when i want to play bass and have to imagine my guitar playing octives that low. If i had my way, i would get both for free...

that's cuz flea is a bass god =D

Start listening to Victor Wooten, bass player for the Flecktones.

My favorite bassist of all time. Amazing Jazz fusion stuff. I'm seeing the Flecktones live on Saturday (!!!)

I used to play bass, but time constraints ended that. I'm all rusty, now.

I got that Squier P-Bass for 90 clams. I changed the pickup with a $30 EMG Select (at stewmac.com) and it sounds pretty nice.

Oh NOES! You left out Jaco! 🙂

Go download some Jaco Pastorius. He is widely considered the Jimi Hendrix of the bass world. Sadly, he isn't alive anymore.

Please go take lessons from someone who knows what they are doing.
If you teach yourself you will just limit your ability and have to relearn technique later to advance.
You probably won't even be able to comprehend what Wooten is doing...
Just listen to artists who you want to sound like. if its rock, then emulate a rock bassist.

Victor Wooten was on conan??? I've got to find that.
I saw the flecktones last year, and even though its essentially a masturbation fest, bela and victor floored me. Bela's classical stuf is mindblowing... some of his raking is so awesome to see live.

Agreed 😛

i'd highly suggest taking lessons for at least a little while, they will be invaluble. keep at it and soon you'll be the next les claypool!

Thanks for the links. I've wanted to pick up a bass, too. (I don't think you area allowed to live in my area for too long without either becomming a musician or dating one)

Yeah, you will want to "walk" your fingers on the strings, it will give you good rhythm, and make it a bit easier for you too 🙂

As for which fingers on which string, it will depend on what notes you will be playing, and which feels most comfortable for the song. 🙂

Also check out [l=UltimateGuitar]http://www.ultimate-guitar.com[/b] for some tabs, they have a few bass tabs for songs 🙂

Flea is NOT a Bass God.
Stanley Clark, Alphonso Johnson, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm and Billy Sheehan all kick that little dork's ass all over the stage.
