Just curious, how did you think this game was going to be an open world when it is based in a subway system mostly?

I thought I would have the choice of going to places at any given time, making different choices. When it was first previewed last fall, it had clearly said an open world fallout type.

This game far exceeds the non existent expectations I had. I have an i7 920 and 4870 512MB and this game runs BEAUTIFULLY on High settings DX10 mode and looks excellent. I am amazed at how smooth and great it looks and feels. Especially since STALKER call of Pripryat runs and feels like crap.

I've played for about 2 hours and the game feels like a cross between Fallout 3, STALKER, FEAR, and Thief. It's really quite fun and it's kind of nice not having a quicksave/quickload because it's changed my play style a bit. I also think the scripted events are really well done and add a lot to the game. It's funny how I think I died but since I can't quickly hit quickload I just let the screen play out and see I'm not dead yet and watch it play out.

I played quite a bit of this last night. It's pretty good. I wasn't really expecting anything since I didn't know anything about the game before starting. It's really reminding me of FEAR. I don't like the save system though. There's been a few times where I was trying to sneak through a level, and ended up alerting everyone that I was there, but didn't realize it until I had crossed another checkpoint, since they are so close together. I couldn't go back to an earlier checkpoint, so I had to replay the whole level.

Wearing the gas mask is kind of annoying. It looks like my contacts are dry and I spend the whole time squinting or blinking.

I'm only about an hour in and I entered an area that requires multiple gas masks yet I don't have any. I can't backtrack, and am not really sure what do to...

Well it just happened again. I was trying to sneak through a building and thought I could get away with silently killing 2 guys standing next to each other. Usually a throwing knife is a one hit kill, but one guy took 3 so it alerted a bunch of other guys. Immediately after they were alerted, it saved a checkpoint, and now I can't go back and undo it.

I don't know how to use spoiler tags, but I'm in chapter two when you first go outside with the trader. I have enough money to buy a better weapon beforehand in the market, but each one I choose doesn't seem to be any good. First time I bought the pistol with a rifle stock and even though it does decent damage, when I get surrounded by snouts I miss a lot with it. The next time I loaded I picked the auto-shotgun but it seems like it scatters pellets too much. How did you others spend your currency at the market before where I am at right now?

I honestly bought no weapons when I finished the game, the only thing that I did buy was the required gas filters requested by Bourbon later on in the game. I did end up using the hell out of my "currency" towards the end of game due to lack of ammo drops required for the set of guns I had on me.

This game isn't linked to your Steam account is it? If anyone wants to sell me theirs shoot me a PM. Or for that matter if anyone wants to chip in on one at Gogamer (I'll buy, you can have it when I'm done), shoot me a pm too. . Think I have to pick this up....

The game has good atmosphere etc. but the shooting is crap. Its like I'm shooting paper dolls or something.

Taking the open world/ rpg elements out of STALKER just makes it bleh.

How does this game compare to STALKER? I have no idea what STALKER is even like, but I liked this game. Is it scarier?

Got it last night, just played it for an hour. It's gorgeous, but runs like shit on a fairly new system (i5 750 and 5770). Still looks great though at 1680x1050 and high with DX11.

I was expecting something along the lines of Stalker and some "role-playing", but so far, it seems like a shooter with places to buy guns. Then again, I wasn't really paying attention, was watching 'Aliens vs Predator Requiem' on TV (wow, replaced Jason with a predator and a bunch of aliens).

I think someone already in this thread already said it best it's CoD meets Stalker without the RPG elements. This game isn't a replica of stalker it's linear but very immersive.

I'm tempted to pick it up but the cheapest I can find it is £21 ($32ish).

Going to wait until the price comes down I think.

Side Note: Anyone know why Valve has pulled Metro 2033 off Steam's purchase list for the UK? In addition to this it can still be added to Steam by CD Key.

My quick lunchbreak review (no major spoilers):

It seems fairly unpolished to me. Why is there no melee??

Also it's a fairly linear game although you can (and are supposed to) explore quite a bit, almost bioshock style. The problem is that there are places where a NPC is supposed to assist you, and if you explore then the NPC scene can break itself. In my case it was near the beginning where you have to jump across a radioactive river - if I explored the dude wouldn't even try to help me, I'd just fall and he'd stand there looking around helplessly. It REALLY breaks the submersiveness of the game. Granted it was nice to discover that each chapter is split up numerous times so it's not a big deal to start over earlier..

It's very dreary and depressing. Having to wear that annoying gas mask when you go outside really makes things look bad, and getting a glimpse of how things would look when nicely colored was frustrating since you can't really experience it. I'd love to play this game engine with brighter surroundings (I'm early on, so this could happen)

Charging up the flashlight is stupid. It's (IMO) a useless game element that they added just 'cause'. It doesn't add anything, and combined with swapping gas mask filters is just too much needless stuff added on.

All of that being said it's a fairly fun game. Think HL2 with more shooting and less problem solving. My biggest gripe by far is the way the world looks through the gas mask, I'm a little ways into chapter 2 and I hope this isn't a major game element.

There is actually some degree of melee. For some guns, the right click is the melee, but it's useless. I keep mashing the right-click in games now thanks to Left4Dead. In this game, melee doesn't do much of anything. I got killed so many times meleeing a monster cause I ran out of ammo.

I purchased it over the weekend and will back up most of what KaOTic says. It's very linear, and I really do wish they'd kept some RPG elements. At the very least, I'd like to be able to go BACK to earlier settlements to sell/purchase items, and random encounters along the way would've been excellent. You could keep playing indefinitely, that way. Hopefully a mod will be released that will allow this, and add a ton more complexity like all the STALKER mods.

Checkpoint system - I prefer to quicksave. The checkpoint system would be GREAT if it saved more frequently so you had more load choices, so you can't have the situation coldmeat is stuck in where he has to replay a good 20 minutes just because he accidentally alerted a guard.

Stealth is not as well-implemented as I'd hoped. Would've really preferred a more developed stealth system.

Gameplay - Enjoyable! I really enjoy the concept of bullets also being currency, and I've really enjoyed the combat so far.

Overall, I think it's an excellent release, and if you want to play STALKER set on HL2 rails (very well-done rails), then pick this up. Besides, you're crawling around dark haunted fucking subway tunnels in post-Apocalyptic Moscow. Very fun. ;)

/agree but not enough immersiveness for me at least. :) I'd say wait until it's on sale before buying...

Pacing, rail shooter, general anxiety over what's around the next bend. The pacing is probably the thing most similar. You can go a little while sometimes without seeing an enemy, and then suddenly shit hits the fan and rat-things are swarming up from the floor.

I keep making the mistake of playing this game while high, and subsequently getting lost repeatedly. hehehe

Edit: Is it me, or is the most unlikely thing about this game the fact that, post-apocalypse, somehow a bunch of Russians decided to turn Nazi? I can accept rat-mutants, and somehow only needing a gas mask above ground... but Nazis? Yowza.

However they are the best villains, on par with zombies, beat only by zombie Nazis.

How is the game like FEAR?

The parts where you're somewhere else - something in the game messes with your mind [and you find yourself in another area/world that isn't in the game].

Just finished it - ending was kinda odd...

What was the answer to the Steam thing? Is this game officially linked to Steam once you install? If not, anyone want to sell theirs?

Never played FEAR. To anybody that has, is it a good game?

FEAR? FEAR is one of the best shooters ever made, the original being considered the best of the series, iirc. Pick up the Gold Pack if you can, all three are well-worth playing.

Ok, so I have to upgrade my video card to play a game that has worse graphics and far less frame rates than MW2? What's this, technology moving backwards?

Pretty decent game, atmospheric but it makes me think about/want to play fallout 3 more heh, fallout 3 had a cool subway system as well and wasent linear at all.
