starting to get into it because my co-workers got me addicted. Is there anyway to see if I am getting ripped off on an ebay deal or not? I know price checks aren't really allowed here, so its hard to ask directly.

What should I be looking for in a gun. Not for speedball at all, probably gonna buy in the 400-600 dollar range.

Also, what brands should I be going for with this one...STO? Tippmann? I've heard to stay away from brass-eagle.

tippmann 98custom, if not going for speedball and get a nice set of goggles that you feel comfortable with
and get a 20oz co2 if you plan to stick with co2 and not hpa, n2
and upgrade the barrel, yup yup, almost forgot that. I'd get a 12" or 14" either smart parts progressive or J&J ceramic (what I have/love :p)
don't listen to people if they say the longer the better that's just silly... after 14" it's just a waste of gas
and don't get a flatline barrel, they suck... they may add extra distance but the balls won't even break at that range

edit: you can show me the deals on ebay I can see if they're good or not (ill try)

brass eagle isn't too bad, certain stuff is worse than other though

I'd stay away from 98 DEGREES, though - unless it's a cheap little thing like a pod

autionvilliage.com is a good, cheap site - way more trustworthy than eBay

I've always found smart parts is good quality for harnesses and such, fyi

Go ahead and post the auction, that's not really a price check thread (mods correct me if I'm wrong). I haven't played in years, but I know about what decent gear should cost.

When I was playing 6 years ago, Paintballgear.com (it's Action Villiage now or something, but the address is the same) always had pretty good prices.

Edit: And JDrake's suggestions are the same as what I'd say.

jdrake is back?

yeah, tippman 98 is a pretty good starter, from what i understand. my friend had one, good gun.

even more accurate and deadly was is phantom pump action gun. not as fast firing, obviously, but insanely accurate!

One important thing is whether it's for speedball or not.

But for non-speedball related paintball, I highly suggest a Tippmann98 Custom. Ive had mine for years, and while all my friends' guns break on them throughout a day of playing, mine never fails. It NEVER has. It is a very reliable gun, and it isn't too expensive.

For goggles, it is all personal oppinion, and what feels best to you. I personally think that JT makes the best goggles. Watever they are, make sure they have Thermal Lenses so they won't fog. You will soon find out that fog is the #1 enemy of paintball goggles.

If you want even more, get a new barrel. I bought a 14 incher for my 98 custom. It is amazing. Most importantly though, DO NOT get a barrel longer that 14 inches. Anything more will be a waste. Also, as a sidenote, if you get a 98 Custom, or some Tippmann, many will suggest the flatline barrel. Do not get it. My friend made the mistake of getting one, and it shoots far, but has to have a very high loop to it to get this high. It isn't very accurate.

Additional thoughts: I always tell people that Airsoft is better than paintball for multiple reasons, but in your case, it sounds like you shouldn't swtich since you are doing it with your co-workers. However, if you get bored of paintball, airsoft is always there. If you set a budget on this, remember to leave lots of extra cash for paintballs. Purchasing paintballs makes the sport very expensive.

No matter what you buy though, have fun, it's a great sport.

If you want to spend a little more money than an entry level Tippman 98, then I would go for a Automag/Minimag. I have owned mine since 1995 and it is still my first line marker. My minimag is for the most part stock. I did some modifications to the trigger and a few things internally that makes it still a contender on the field. I can shoot 10+ balls a second with out going electric. Most top end electric shoot 15+.

I also own an '98 Autococker fully tricked out as a back up marker. I have a Tippman SL-II (1988) that still works an I take it out to the wood fields snipe with or I want a challenge. I had to retire my spyder after 3 years of play.
