Anyone own those mini-pcs?

What do you think of them? Are they worthy PC for gaming and neffing? I want to get one to save space on my desk.

Place tower on floor. Problem solved.

They get too hot. If you want to game, get a big case with big fans.

If you really want the compact size, I would look into a Sonata or LanBoy.

I built a Shuttle SN41G2 for my bro's birthday. It's tiny and he loves it. I carried it home on a bus and lots of people were impressed by it. The only problem is that you really won't be able to ever upgrade the motherboard.

Well, it makes sense doesn't it? 😕

I think Minendo has bitterness against me because I PWNED him once.

Then admit that your real reason is "those cubes look neat!" 🙂

I can't make myself buy a cube because they aren't very expandable and aren't very quiet. With a full-size case you can use an ultra-quiet Seasonic power supply and low-RPM 80mm or 120mm fans instead of whiny little 40-60mm. You have 2+ 5.25" drive bays, 3+ 3.5" bays, and a full set of PCI slots. But if you only want 1-2 HD, 1 optical, and don't mind a little extra noise then go for it.

(edit-tyops 😉 )

I have one and use it to play games. I guess it gets hot in there, but it's not like the computer stops working or you stick your hand in there and it burns away your flesh. I don't really care about heat as long as my computer works fine 🙂

The only bad thing is that there isn't much space for the videocard. I have a Geforce4 ti4200 and it fits well, but if a videocard is bigger there might be problems!

I have one, did a lot of mods to shoehorn a Panaflow 80mm power supply fan (at 7v) to replace the hideous 40mm stock fan. Also got a heatsink pipe (Shuttle) that works well, that panaflow 80mm only needs to run at 5v to provide cooling. It's quiet now so that's nice, but in stock configuration it was just ridiculously loud.

I wanted to get one of those Shuttle Mini PC's or the MSI one but I figured it would be better just to get a small tower instead. Ended up getting the Antec Sonata and its been great. Quiet and pretty small. My only problem with those mini PCs is that small power supply, if it burns out it'll be hard and or costly to replace it.

LOL... I agree.

I can't understand why people would pay $50 for a HSF if they're not even planning on overclocking. My computer runs hot as hell.. Every part of the outside case is hot to the touch. This is probby because I have 3 7200rpm hard drives, 2 cds, 350W power supply (with fan turned way down) and one slow quiet cpu fan and one video card fan. Oh yea.. and the entire computer sits in a cubby in my desk with a closed door.

I really could care less if it's hot in there. My computer runs perfectly stable and has been doing so for a year. I never turn it off so I shouldn't have to worry about the hard drives failing due to heat expansion blah.

Now.. laptops on the other hand... a hot laptop is bad for your penis.

I have a shuttle SB51G, all you have to do is replace the fan if you think that it runs too hot. I don't mind the heat as long as it is quiet, which it is. I have a Radeon 8500DV in mine and I can play games fine and of course it can handle surfing and neffing. I use mine for recording and encoding of TV shows along with playing DVDs and music, it works beautifully with the ATI Remote Wonder.

As for upgrading, if you buy a Shuttle you can buy newer motherboards from Shuttle along with replacement power supplies.

Whenever I have friends that want to watch movies I just bring my shuttle in its carrying bag and we watch all the DVDs that I ripped to my hard drive.

It is not as limited in capabilites as many on this board seem to think.
