Actually, it's a pre-WWI gun. The name stems from it's creator Georg Luger. Official German military designation is P-08 or Pistole Model 1908 for the year it was adopted. A very unique and complicated gun, employed a proprietory "toggle action" mechanism which required extremely fine tolerances of all moving parts, thus making them expensive and difficult to produce. It was replaced in 1938 by Walther P-38 which became the world's first service double action pistol.
What makes Luger so comfortable to shoot is the curve of the handle which makes for a natural, unobtrusive grip. The only other service gun that replicates this grip is Glock.
