Anyone own a Sony STRDE995B A/V Receiver?

Turkish

Hey guys, I finally decided to go with this A/V Receiver for my Home Theater and was wondering if any of you own this model? It's exact product name is Sony STRDE955B Surround Receiver. Any experiences with this receiver? Good or bad doesn't matter, please give me some information. The site that I am planning on buying is Onecall. Here is the link:

Sony STRDE995B

Thanks a bunch.

I owned one for about a week, and returned it.

I got a Harman Kardon and never looked back.

Sony just ain't what they used to be.

In the end, the sound. But other things bugged me as well. It was too slow to switch surround modes, and it had some very funky discrete remote codes that wouldn't even work right with the latest Sony universal remotes.

Do a "Pepsi Challenge" with the Sony and a higher end product like Denon or HK. You'll hear a HUGE difference in sound quality. Hell you don't even have to get HK's or Denon's high end products. Even their entry level products will smoke a high end non-ES Sony consumer level receiver.

Here's something to do: Listen to an HK AVR325 (the low end of HK's line) alongside the Sony. Have someone switch between them without telling you which is which.

Have to agree...sony is...not garbage like some brands, but they're basically just riding on a name.

My brother has a sony receiver. It tends to flake out if you try to drive it hard, and I had to pull it apart and re-solder points on the circuit board to fix a cutting out problem it had - just poor quality manufacturing...

it just depends on the model...my brother has an ES series receiver and no problems..he has had it for like 3 years. btw my brother works for sony...so I there's my connection for sony stuff

what do you guys think of this Onkyo receiver? I know Onkyo is not the best brand, but I head they were better than average. Or am i wrong? Thanks a lot.

For around $500 you could get an HK AVR 325. I'd get that over the Onkyo any day.

well actually, the final price for the onyko is $300 after msn cash back and a coupon i had. so if you can suggest any HKs for $300-$350, i will consider 😛

HK AVR 225 can be had for 300 and change. It's 5.1 instead of 7.1... but I doubt you were looking for an EX setup anyhow, right?

BTW, don't try to compare wattage claims made by other companies to HK. HK gives honest RMS wattage numbers. They seem low, but trust me, they will blow the doors off the other lower end stuff.

So you are saying HK AVR 225 is better than the Onkyo one right? 😛 i know it's a stupid question to ask but I want to get a receiver that will take me over the years..
And I don't even know what EX mean, so do you mind letting me know ? 🙂 Thanks.

EX is 7.1 (seven speakers and a sub). 5.1 is the standard now. Very few movies are encoded with EX sound tracks.

The HK will please you. If you are unsure, just do a side by side listen test with identical speakers.

And yes, HK sounds nicer than Onkyo. About the only thing I'd compare with HK is Denon.

Cool, thanks for the advice man. I guess, I will go with the HK since you say claimed watts aren't important. It better be good though 😛

Whoa now. Don't blindly believe any old idiot on the intarweb. 😛

Do a listen test first. A lot of this stuff is subjective. What I don't like about Onkyo or Sony's sound might float your boat. So listen to it first, OK? 🙂
