Anyone own a Nissan Maxima?

Looking at the 96 - 99 series . i saw at edmunds that it does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. sounds pretty sweet for a sedan. or should i just go for the originally planned 98 accord ex?

I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima and a 1998 Honda Accord v6.
Get the Maxima as it is a better car by far. The automatic Maxima/Accord are pretty much the same speed, but a stick maxima can get you into the 14.9/15.0 1/4 mile. 6.6 sounds about right for a manual Nissan Maxima.
By the way my maxima has 50,000 miles on it and I've owned it since it has been at 9,000 miles. No problems at all and I abuse the hell out of it. I remember I floored it once like 50x and it is still running strong.
Get a GLE/SE.
There is no advantage that the accord has over the maxima that I can think of. Even the gas mileage is the same and Accord has "Vtec". If you look at the interior of a maxima and the interior of an Accord you will see that the Maxima is far more luxurious. Maxima also has more room.

Do you mean 97-99 models? The 95-96 models were essentially the same design with the 190 hp engine, except for the rear being shaped a little differently. The good thing about getting a used one is the resale value on Maximas suck ass. You should be able to find one for pretty cheap.

I can say don't buy the generation that includes the '92, the electronics (the antenna and the window risers) SUCK. (I know from personal experience on this one)

I actually bought a 2001 Max SE after hating my '98 Accord EX V-6. The Accord was like driving a Buick - it had tons of nose dive and body roll, and overall felt really pudgy and kind of wallowed through turns. I much prefer the Maxima. In all fairness, I really dislike automatics, and so I got a Max with a stick.

and the point of this post?
the OP said he was looking at a 96-99.
he's not even considering anything close to a 92.
why bother posting about a 92?

heh, for the record, its not the electronics. The window regulators are a pull system and go bad about every 80K. The window motors are solid. The Antenna is a pain, but again its not the electronic part. Its the plastic in the mast that breaks. $20 fix.

In 95 when I was a teen my dad bought a 95 Maxima gXE with 5 speed. Cheapest one you could buy. It was so awesome and I made love to it, and that's why last year I bought a 2000 SE (also manual transmission). I also cuddle with it at night. Maximas are just sweet.

95-99 are all 4th gens. However unlike the 95-97, the 98-99 models have not 190 HP but 205. I recall that the 95-97 with a 5 speed has a 0-60 of 7.1. The 98-99 has a similar 0-60 of the 2000-2001 maximas (222 HP in them. which is around 6.7 or so for the 5 speed.

It's tough to find, but do yourself a favor and buy a 5 speed. The engine in these cars is exceptionally reliable and has won numerous awards for its design as one of the best V6s. I won't say the quality of the car is as good as a similarly aged/priced honda because it isn't (although it's not crap like a GM 🙂). But who cares when you're smoking that honda's ass - maximas are better for a guy who wants some speed. Accords are what old people drive! Honda knows that and that's why only recently is honda selling a version of the accord that can hang with the maxima.

I got good enough @ replacing window risers in my 91' that I could do it in 1/2 hour🙁

For the past couple of months I'd been looking around for used cars and the 4th gen Maxima was at the top of my list. I only wanted one if I could get it in manual and out of the 100 maximas in a 75 mile radius there were 2 5 speeds and they were both an hour and a half away. I got tired of waiting and got an Acura Legend, but if you can find a 5 speed in good condition jump on it.

hmm, dunno if i will be able to get a manual version since my parents seem to be set on getting me an auto. my mom doesnt know how to drive a manaul and she needs to be able to drive it and i dont know how to drive a manual either. anyways, was trying to save my parents and myself some money .are insurance costs for a maxima and accord about the same?

Make her learn 🙂.

Aa a cult car, the maxima will have a lot of biased reviewers. Its like asking die-hard LOTR fans what they thought of LOTR. Its not being veiwed from an opjective standpoint.

Your best bet is to drive both (if possible) and see which one you like. For MOST people, the accord is a more appropriate car. However, given the vast sales of SUVs, etc. most people don't pick the "appropriate" car....they pick the car they want. Therefore, unless you drive it yourself, you wont really know.

my parents have an old '93 maxima gxe (VG30DE engine), and although "wear and tear" takes its toll on the maxima much quicker than our hondas, its also the most fun to drive...the engines are rock solid, i'd imagine it has to take a LOT of abuse to die.

and yes, resale values suck; our '93, though in excellent condition, is only worth around $1.5-$2k i think...i'm kind of tired of the car and wished they would trade it in, but it doesn't make sense to "give" a perfectly working maxima away...

uhh...my point is, GET THE NISSAN. I'd rather get a 240sx, but that's just me 😛

Good point (s). I wanted something reliable and large and also fast and maxima was just far and away the best choice in my price range.

Also as stickshift said resale on maximas suck so you can get a late model one only a couple of years old at a small fraction of the original price. Put a year and 10,000 miles on it and the thing can lose 20%+ from original cost.

What he said.

The choice is simple....
M A X I M A.

If someone can point out something the Accord has over the Maxima please list it because I cannot think of anything.

I know you can get a loaded Maxima SE for pretty cheap and that includes:
Leather seats, heated front seats, 200 watt bose system (this is the best bose in a nissan ever IMO), sunroof, 16" alloy wheels, spoiler, fog lights, sports suspension, leather wrapped steering wheel, Leather shifter cover, white guages etc.

By the way the Maxima has some nice features... u can roll down the windows just by holding down a button on the keyless remote. Even the armrest is of a good material. The Accord is cloth and it looks cheap. The e-brake has a cover, the Accord does not.

Get the Maxima.

I am not being bias just out of the cars you listed I would get a Maxima. If you want an automatic then they are both the same speed, but the Maxima has a lot more torque so you will pull ahead by 2-4 car lengths.

My other recommendations would be: Mazda Millenia, 1997 Q45, Infiniti I30, 3.2 TL, 300M .. but I'd still get the Maxima. Why do you think there is this maxima "cult".. people love their Maximas.
