Anyone own a Gigabyte DS3?

Hey guys,

I noticed recently that nothing happened when I plugged in headphones to the front panel audio on my antec 900 case. I did some fooling around with the Gigabyte audio utility and checked the box for disable front panel jack detection. Now, I get audio from the front panel with headphones but the rear speakers do not mute when headphones are plugged in like they should.

Google shows that apparently other people have the same problem as me, and they have only gotten as far as having sound playing from both ports at the same time.

Does anyone own this mobo and have the front panel audio functioning correctly?

Thanks,
Darren

i don't have that m/b but the last gigabyte m/b i had you needed to set a jumper if you were using certain audio jacks, also did you look in the "adv bios" settings - the one you get in by pressing something like ctrl+f1 or some key combo after you are already in the bios? just some random thoughts

Thanks for the reply bob4432. There are no jumpers on this mobo for audio, and the adv bios options are all overclocking settings.

There's gotta be more people with this board, I just want to know if anyone has the front audio working right.

no probs, i would agree that that board is very popular and am surprised that noboby has answered your questions yet...

Hey Cheezeit, I sent you a PM yesterday, but I did get the front panel to work as you mentioned in your post. I just powerdown my speakers when I plug in my headphones, works great... now if only nVidia would release some damn working video drivers for vista.

Yeah I have a Gigabyte P965-DQ6, and checking the box for disabling front panel audio detection will do just what you see it does: it runs audio through the hp and main speakers at the same time, just turn off/mute your main speakers when you use headphones, not a huge inconvenience IMHO.

Now on a related note, do you also have problems with your front panel audio where if you drag/resize a window around or scroll through files, you get strange high pitched noises to your headphones? I'm getting this issue and while it's not too annoying, I figured I'd just take the opportunity now and address the issue.

I have a DS3 Rev1.0 and an Antec P180; I have the EXACT same problem as you. :( As you pointed out, there are no jumpers for sound on the motherboard. Though I can "get sound thru the headphones" it's still not enough to just shut off the speakers b/c the volume I can get thru the headphones is VERY low. :( I have tried with a full-size set of Sony cans and three diff pairs of earbud-type headphones all w/the same result.

The GB control panel does nothing.

It's not been a huge problem for me b/c I don't use HPs that often. I could just plug the phones into the green speaker out jack on the rear panel, but that's a PITA.

Subscribing to this thread JIC someone posts a good fix.

@ user: I have not tried scrolling though things yet, but I noticed alot of static system noise with headphones. I guess the front audio on this mobo is pretty poor quality.

@ MichaelD: I can get sound through all earbuds that I've tried and the volume is sufficient. My mobo is a rev3.3 though. However, I just thought of something that might make a difference. Do you guys plug the case audio plugs onto the mobo via the HD plug (chunk that looks like internal USB plug) or the 97 audio (many different individual wires)? I have mine plugged in by the HD audio.

Oh those individual wires are the same as the block, it's just Antec thought it might be useful for if there's a motherboard with a strange fp_audio pin config or other things like that.

Thanks, Cheezeit. I plug the case's front panel audio ports into the MB via the many different little black connectors. I was very careful to follow the pinouts correctly...I don't think I made a mistake, though it is possible. Being that I DO get sound, I think I got it right. Also, being that I'm not the only one w/this problem, that makes me feel a bit better.

My front USB ports work just fine. :)

You use the connector by the HD audio? Can you use the many individual little wires on that connector? I can't remember and opening my case is a PITA b/c I've got so much stuff plugged into it.

EDIT: The connector "block" == individual wires.

For instance:
Link

See the chart that says "For Intel® High Definition Front Panel Audio" ?

Now look at the chart that says: "For AC-97 Front Panel Audio."

Looking at the Signal Names, clearly one can conclude that the Antec 900/P180 enclosure comes with AC-97 Front Panel Audio, no Intel HD audio support. Therefore, one cannot have the motherboard detect when a signal to the front is present because the right hardware is not there. So the best solution is whatever setting you have it at, however inadequate it may be.

MichaelD, you wasted your time carefully plugging in those little wires, as the connector "block" does the same exact thing.

My case, the Antec P180, doesn't have a connector block for the front panel audio ports; only the individual little pinned ones. There was no other way to do it.

No prob. This is the second Antec case I've owned where something on the front panel didn't work. I've got an older SX835II case (awesome steel hulk!) that the front panel USB ports refuse to work on, and I've had two diff MB's in there too. The device gets recognized; i.e. there is an electrical connection, but there is always "a problem" as Windows says.

On this case, the P180 (best case I've ever owned), the USB ports work, but not the audio. I still won't buy anything but an Antec. :) The build quality of the case itself and the features are tops, IMO.

Thanks alot man, that really clears it up. I'm just glad it works, despite the minor inconvenience. I thought there was a difference because on my old Antec P160, there were also two connector blocks. The USB like block worked on a DFI ultra-d, so I guess the DFI board used AC97.

Thanks to Michael too, I hope you get the audio volume fixed up. USB has always been fine on every case I've used, I guess that's because the format is pretty standardized now.
