I'm looking to pick up a used C-Max in a few months. It looks like you can pick up a 2013 with 60k miles for around 13-14k.

Considering that the car retails for like 28-32k, 2-3 year depreciation is significant. A similar Prius would be like 16-17k. And he C-Max looks like it is more comfortable, has better trim, quieter, and more storage.

Now, I have heard that he C-Max has reliability problems which would explain the low resale value. Specifically it has a dead battery problem, also some models have cut off power while driving. It also does not have a spare tire, instead relying on some tire sealant for emergencies.

Any owners? How many problems have you had? Is it a big risk to buy a used one?

I don't know about reliability, but I think it's a possibility the resale has tanked partly because Ford got in trouble for having false MPG ratings for the C-Max.

I have a friend who has a C-Max Energi model, and he has taken it to the dealer a few times due to issues with EV only range being significantly lower than it should. (7 miles instead of 20 or something like that)

I've had a CPO 2013 Energi for almost three months now. Overall I like it. I paid $17,100 for it with 50k miles. I bought the Ford warranty extension to 7 years/100k so I'm covered just like the factory warranty until early 2020.

The only real complaints I've had so far are with Sync. The GPS was reading substantially offset and made nav basically unusable. I took it in for another issue (driver's door handle touch unlock wasn't working) and they did a master reset on the infotainment system and it's been fine since.

It's quiet, comfortable, gets outstanding gas mileage in my use pattern (85 mpg on my first tank) and ~60 mpg when driven much longer distances and charged every night. Of course these numbers fail to account for the cost of electricity but that is around $20/mo so nearly negligible.

And the best part, unlike most hybrids it doesn't feel horribly underpowered.

At the prices they are going for (particularly the non Energi) you can add the Ford extended warranty for not all that much. You'll still end up at like $15k total for a car with warranty for 5 more years.

That's pretty hard to beat, IMO.

that's a sweet deal.

No issues with my Cmax energi that are worth noting, never had a problem with sync or navigation.

Do you have the recent Sync 4.4 update? I just applied it last week and it's an amazing update to usability and stability.
