I'm not sure if this applies to all cars or just with Honda in particular, but I believe Honda has a break in period that you once you pass, the mpg gets better.

They talk about this topic on the Honda forums; I bought a 2008 AWD CRV and for the first couple thousand miles, I was averaging about 20mpg. I'm almost at 4000 miles now, and I'm averaging 24.

If it's a new car then the fuel economy usually improves depending on the break in period.

Green Hybrid Civic Mileage Database

The IMA system in the Civic is the virtually the same same as the one in the Insight. It favors long distance driving where the Prius does best in stop and go driving. Between the two I like the Prius better (pure mpg), though the Insight will beat both hands down.

Just from checking fueleconomy.gov...I don't really get the point of the civic hybrid. The civic hybrid gets a little over 40 combined. The regular civic gets around 30 combined. Thats certainly an improvement...but the car costs a lot more initially and I have concerns about long term parts and maintenance costs. And the hybrid hardly gets astronomically better MPG. If I am a cheapass (and I am) it makes more sense for me to buy a sub compact, to me anyway.

Yes, I'm sure with careful driving you can squeeze more then those ratings out of the civic hybrid...but careful driving can squeeze a lot more out of the civic as well.

The insight is a little more interesting based on those numbers, now that starts to be an efficient people mover (gas wise). 50 combined is a more impressive number, especially if you're getting close to that in crappy city driving.

My neighbor has had one for almost a year now. She just went over 10000 miles and is actually averaging between 42-48 mpg. FWIW, it really is a nice little car...and quiet too.

Their 50 combined is for the CVT version. I easily get 55 mpg in stop and go driving and 70 mpg + on the highway. My numbers will even be better next week when I go PHEV (plugin Hybrid).

Greenhybrid Manual Insight - 63.9 combined

I have been looking at the Civic hybrid compared to my current car and mileage standpoint. I have Chevy Blazer and ~23 mpg so ~40 mpg is really eye opening.

I still think the Prius is a better vehicle than the Civic and will net better overall mileage, but the two cars are very different. There should be more and possibly better options in the next 2 - 3 years.

The reliability of Honda CVTs has been rather spotty in the first generation Civic Hybrids, but it's too soon to say about the second. I will say that on the second generation CVTs, they switched to a CVT specific fluid (also back speced the first generation models) and the maintenance minder is now alerting owners for a fluid change at least every 30k compared to 60k or more.

It is one of the cars I am considering, along with the regular Civic and some other cars in the class. I do like the styling of the Civic Hybrid a lot.
