Anyone own a canon rebel xt?

I am going to buy one, but unsure if I should buy just the body and get a better lens

or if I should get the kit with the lens?

Which lens did you get?

I heard the 28 105 is really good

Any recomendations would be great

Thanks

John

I don't have the 350 but the 300. With the kit of the 300 you got the 18-50 cheapo lens. Everyone bashed it but in reality it is a decent macro and throw around lens. Hell, to replace it for $100 you can't beat it.

Remember when you are buying a DSLR you are not buying a camera but a system. Try one out first!!!

It all depends what you are shooting. If you are doing just portrait and family shots, etc, the kit lens will be fine for you.

i like my nikon d70.

that said, the xt is still good, but you should research the two side by side to see what kind of featureset you really need.

For family shots and stuff, the kit lens is fine. Macro is OK, zoom range is reasonable for small group shots and for landscapes. It's main good points are that it is cheap, and very light. I haven't replaced my kit lens, as at present I can't justify the extra cost.

A 28-105 would likely be a bit too long for many landscapes - it's also a bigger and heavier lens and it's macro isn't as close as the kit lens.

Then 17-85 IS is supposed to be a good upgrade for the kit lens - Doesn't lose too much at the wide end, with a bit more length and image stabiliser, as well as generally better quality.

Get the kit lens too. It's pretty good, and a very handy range to have. It's not Leica-sharp but you can take great pictures with it if you work within its limitations. It's very, very good for photographing people. You certainly won't be able to beat it for the hundred bucks it cost.

I wouldn't bother with the kit lens. I bought the $80 50mm F1.8 prime lens and its way better to my untrained eye than the kit lens. I just didn't find that the kit lens took very good pictures, i'd say save the money and get another lens. There is the 28-135 with IS that is supposed to be a very good lens, but your looking at around $400 at least for it. You'll soon find that the camera is the cheap part compared to the lenses.

I have an XT with the kit, and think it was a good purchase. If you are new to SLR photography, the included 18-55mm lens is a nice lens to begin with. It's not great at anything, but it's decent at most things. It's also a great lens to use while getting the hang of things, as it is cheap and you won't feel bad if you mess something up. Of course, it can't be compared to a quality lens.
