I believe the current S4 beat the RS4 in Car & Drivers Lightening Lap. If I were looking at Audi's...the new S4 or upcoming S5 with the 3.0"T" is what I would get.

That would be an entirely different level of price range. The RS4 was an $80k car.

I really think I am going to try to swing a 2009 CTS-V, I was hoping to get into a car for $35,000 or so and putting $7,000-10,000 down. The CTS-V is looking like $15k more ($225 more a month). With my wife choosing a much cheaper car (Mazda 3 vs the GTI/Audi A4 hatchbacks), I am still under my $1200 desired 'car payment' a month. Still $700-800 for a car payment is a bit of a joykill.

7:59 on the 'ring puts it in some pretty rare territory.

above Audi's R8, Dodge's Viper GTS, and tied with the C6 Z51, 911 Carrera S, Skyline GT-R R33 V-Spec and Viper SRT10.

My wife hasn't ridden in one yet, but says it looks like an old person's car. ;) She also hates the corvette's tail (not a cute butt)...being she's picking a car that has a face of a happy guppy, I am not too concerned :awe:

I am concerned how the interior will hold up to my dog. My Nissan did pretty well. Not much scratch-type materials and most had good memory. I am sure it will be fine.

Sitting here studying Cisco CCNP TSHOOT...then I need to complete CCNA Wireless and clear my travel schedule. Then I will be rewarded with some more free time to do car shopping on the weekend.

I went and looked at an RS4 again and it may have been a bit small anyway on the inside for my goals on the next car. I really want a fast and fun car that I can say "It's ok everyone, I can drive...hop in".

09 CTS-V's are down to $35k now? That's a lot of car for the money.

Who cares? The new S4 has just as much tech (if not more) and is faster in the lightening lap...so who cares if a used RS4 cost more when it was first purchased.

'09 CTS-V is a solid choice.

s4 or CTS-V would be my choice. I drove behind an earlier model CTS-V at the tail of the dragon for the better part of a weekend and that small block sounded fan-fricking-tastic. Made me want one so bad.

It has to do with what it costs to buy now.

A new S5 today would be at least $10k more just based on invoice and the like...however, at least down here they can't keep them in stock so they carry a premium. It'd be another $250 a month.

I was hoping to spend $35k when I was looking at the '10 SRT8 Charger, '06 M3, etc. The CTS-V is $15k more.

$35k + $15k = $50k.

No,

B5: 2000–2001,
B7: 2006–2008

RS4's are nice cars. I test drove a few, definitely out of my price range at the time, but they're slowly coming down.

They looks slick stock, and sounds great...interior of a luxury car, handles nicely too.

Yep, I misread the OP - he has an S4 not an RS4. My bad.

I know they aren't tons of them around - don't recall even seeing one in the wild but don't the B8 S4's cost around ~48K new? I certainly wouldn't feel like I was getting a deal on a used one for 3K off sticker.

You can definitely get a used one for less....just not easy finding one since they haven't been out for too long. I think they start at ~45K new...and you can quickly option them up to ~55K+ with options (just like a 335i). I threw the 45K number out there since I knew you can get a new one for that.

You'd have drive it off the lot with no options. Even used most 2011's are selling in the mid-50k bracket.

Not so. You can get the Premium Plus and 800+ upgrade for the 19" wheels and walk off the lot for 48K with a fantastic car. And that is before you talk the dealer down. I know when we bought my wife's A4 we were able to get ~3.5K off.

You'd pay about $47k for that S4 here. Premium Plus is Audi's base model. You'd get no sports differential nor any of the things that would contribute to the lightning lap.

I'd rather have the CTS-V with around 10k on the clock or less for that price range.

Doesn't have any of the looks nor style of the RS4 though. Also stoplight to stoplight the S4 with only 4.9 0-60 time is a bit slower than the other cars. If I was going to track/road race it'd be a different story.

They are both based off of A4 platforms...the newer S4 based on a newer, much improved one. The style/looks argument is not worth discussing as purely subjective.

Except it is to me and this is my thread, not a general discussion of the S4.

It's almost August. Did you or your wife gets a car yet? I hope you don't turn into the GTR guy.

ummm, no; not yet. If you have been stalking me (since I have no clue who you are), you'd see I am in the middle of heavy work travel and still have two certifications to bang out by September 14th.

There is no rush as her car is totally fine. A $24,000 Mazda 3 is hardly a GT-R though...The GTI I bought new in 1997 was about that.

Thanks for caring.

One thing I didn't know about the new S4 is the insane MPG it gets...up to 28 highway.

That 3.9 0-60 time of the CTS-V is still enticing, but in real-world mileage even with the MTM ECU on the S4; I'd be looking at 17-18MPG vs 21-23MPG, but .7 seconds slower.

I am not crazy about the new S4 dash, but I am going to go do a test drive when I get some time.

The main sticker on the CTS-V is the mileage and I need to see how the rear seat folds down. I didn't know it's not the same as the standard CTS.

Anyone know if it's like the CTS-V coupe?
