Just got mine going today, running an ASUS A7N8X DLX board, XP 2800+, 512 of PC2100 (getting swapped for PC3200 tomorrow), and Win98 SE (ya,ya, hey, I don't like NTFS, and still like stability). I've found it lends itself well to the overclocking crowd (better than the t-cores anyway), without unlocking the CPU, I was able to achieve a very stable 2.257GHz (aggressive settings in BOIS), more is possible with unlocking the multiplier and running full bandwidth on the memory (I had to bring mine down from 166MHz to 137MHz due to the PC2100). I had a few problems taking the CPU bus over 182MHz but 180MHz seems stabil, (not bad considering 137MHz was about as far as I could take my MP2400+, and 139MHz on my XP2100 thorughbred core CPU's. I'm sure there's moer to be had outta these Bartons, but I like just being able to RIP DVD's faster than real-time at the highest quality settings. If you're going to run WIN98 SE, MAKE SURE you install ActiveX8.1 BEFORE you install the drivers, otherwise you'll have trouble all over the place!

Windows 98 and stability? Yea right. Tell me how stable your system is once you've run a big program like Maya, Photoshop, Premiere, or Soundforge more than 5 hours daily for a week without rebooting (I've done it easily on Windows 2000 Pro and XP systems, but for some reason Win98 would require several reboots a day under that kind of load). Of course, maybe Tom's Hardware was cooking the numbers when they said that there was no difference in game performance between 9x and 2K/XP, and sometimes that 2K/XP outperformed 9x.

Anyway, that is a nice overclock. Good luck with pushing your chip farther. 🙂

I wonder why people still use win 98 you have a computer like that, when you can run xp. I mean at least run 2k, its so much more stable. Friend still runs win 98 and he still gets crashes all the time, yet he refuses to install any newer os.

Yea, the only reason to have 98 is if you are totally addicted to some old DOS-based game that won't work in compatibility mode on 2k or XP. Those people who still try to ignorantly pull the game performance card for Win98 need to pull their head out of their place-where-the-sun-doesn't-shine.
