just out of curiousity, how much is shipping at apple.com's store? i'm thinking of getting the PC iPod from amazon.com with free shipping or from buy.com with their new coupon.

well my patience ran out today. I just went and bought a 10GB Mac iPod from CompUSA, got XPlay, works great. This thing rocks. Well worth the $450! :)

Congrats! I am going to hold out. They didn't ship Friday, hopefully this week.

I grew impatient too. I bought a mac 10 GB iPod a few weeks ago from pcconnection.com. Great service there! I use Xplay and it works like a champ -- no problems whatsoever. I also got a Marware Sportsuit Convertible case for it and it's awesome. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up either the Mac or the PC version. The iPod is just fantastic.

After playing with it for a day, I'm convinced no one can touch Apple when it comes to a portable MP3 player. And the XPlay group is equally impressive. I know people complain about the cost of these things, but they really are worth it imho.

What makes the winpod/ipod better then any of the other 10-20 gig mp3 players out there? i mean the price diffrence is significant compared to others...

Design for one. Compare it to any of the other hard disk based MP3 players on the market. iPod owns them all, Archos Jukebox Recorder, Creative Nomad Jukebox 3, all have weak design.

Excuse my ignorance but surely it's just an MP3 player? What makes it so special? I'm not attacking, just very curious. I think they 'look' cool but surely one Mp3 player is as good as any other once you get past things like battery life etc. What sets it apart from the Nomad Jukebox? Is it just the size and look?

Yup, a lot is in the design. I looked at the Creative Nomad3 Jukebox quite a bit, debated on whether or not I should just get it instead of the iPod. While the new Jukebox has some advantages, the svelte design of the iPod really just sells me, and once they announced the new improved models I was sold for sure :) Price drop didn't hurt either :)

I recently got a Nomad 3 20 gig for $350. I just couldn't see spending $500 for the iPod plus $30+ for a firewire card (my pc is a bit old, has no firewire).

The Nomad 3 is very nice. True the form factor/size doesn't quite work for carrying it in a pocket (cargo pants are fine though). So if thats how you plan on using it, get the iPod. But my sits on a desk at work, sits on the arm console of my car as I commute, or is in my backpack. So the physical size didn't bother me.

And USB 1.1 isn't all that bad. Putting the original 20 gigs took a while, but putting an album or two on at a time, isn't all that bad.

I had an order for a PC one at Amazon.com, but I got impatient and ended up cancelling it and just getting a Mac one. According to Amazon's site, they won't be shipping until Sept. 29th or something like that. I wonder if that's still accurate.

By the way, can someone tell me what the heck "wOOt" means? I see it all the time and have no idea. I'm such a nOOb. :)

I heard the same today. Apparently Amazon has not even shipped the 20G Mac iPod yet, and that's been out a month.

It's just a way of displaying massive excitment. Don't know where it came from, probably a variation of the word "root". To root is to own. * shrug *

EDIT:

This link may help.
