Recently laid off and getting tired of corporate BS....

Been looking around at here.

I was thinking of a restaurant franchise because hell everybody has to eat and I have worked at a Mickey D's before.

I'd like to know how much you can realistically pull in minus all the costs...

i was pretty close to opening a subway franchise, but decided against it in the end. those guys make anywhere from 30-100k depending on how good the store is.

Location is not a problem. It's almost impossible to eat out for lunch M-F because you wait in line for 30-45 minutes at even the crappiest of places...

My dad owns a McDonald's. His dad opened it in the early 80's.

Don't do Mc.Donald's, it's really hard to get into now because of all the schooling you have to do and my dad says there are soo many corporate people above him that always inspect the store that he doesn't even feel like an owner anymore. He is constantly stressed about mystery shops which can happen at any time. They grade your store by a snapshot, and if you get alot of bad grades, your store can be taken away.

I do enjoy the $180,000 a year it brings in though. Plenty of money to buy my gadgets with. :)

Wouldn't do a Mickey D's. They are everywhere here. 180k a year sounds nice though

It's not smart to do a Mickey D's now since it's in a declining market.

Yes, but the 500K plus to get the franchise is a lot of money too.

I thought the franchise chose the locations, or has a strong say in it. They wouldn't want a failing franchise because someone put a place in the middle of nowhere would they?

My father owned a couple of 7-Elevens for 25 years. Sold them because they were too much hassle for what they're worth. I think Subway has pretty low startup costs and operating costs.

I like wingzone.com

Edit: I've never asked my parents about financial information, but I'm pretty sure his best store made less than $100k/year of profit on ~$2 million in sales (including lottery)

You have to qualify for most good franchises. Like having experience in the industry, or sales. Some of them require applicants to have a certain net worth (McDonald's) before they will even talk to you.

Beware of scams. Due dilligence is definately indicated here.

I'm sure things have changed a bit, but my dad bought his first 7-Eleven when he was 20 years old, and he had to get two loans to do it. :)

Don't like 60% of all restaurants fail in the first year? It may be even higher. I know it is one of the riskier businesses you can start as far as percentage that fail anyway.
