I take the Path and the NYC Subway everyday to work. I notice more and more people burying there heads in a newspaper or watching a movie on their iPods/iPhones to notice women that are pregnant or have strollers with them and need to sit down? Elderly people are treated the same?

Would you give up your seat on the train/bus to pregnant women or the elderly during your morning of evening commute?

I always give up my seat. When I'm an old ornery fuck I'll expect the same in return, whether I'm pregnant or not.

Absolutely I would give up my seat.

If one sits in their seat when they see an elderly person or pregnant lady standing and don't do something about it then something is wrong. But entitlement mentality says otherwise. :(

I give up my seat, as I was raised well mannered.

I've noticed lots of people 'expect it' and don't thank people who do give them their seats. Not that you need to be thanked for doing the right thing, but just something I've noticed. I'm mainly talking about the younger generation. The older people are always gracious and usually strike up one nice conversation with you.

You have to think though, how many years does an average elderly person spend sitting? I would think they would be sick of it by now so they won't mind standing.

I have always given my seat up to any woman so that covers pregnant ones and elderly ones already. I would also surrender my seat to an elderly man or anyone who looked like they needed the seat more than I. I have never minded standing.

I haven't traveled on public transport for a few years, but when I did, I always gave up my seat for the elderly. All the pregnant women I remember seeing were already seated, so I assume that enough people follow the small niceties of civilized society.

I would have figured that about you simply from your posts around here.

I've never thought about it. If the opportunity to give up my seat to some stranger that needs it more than me has occurred in my life I wasn't being rude, I just didn't notice. I'm now cringing at the thought of all the imaginary people I've probably pissed off by not waiting with bated breath for the opportunity to inconvenience myself for their benefit. Honestly if I knew who they were I'd apologize. Imagine all the other good manners infractions I might have committed for the same reason; having my head somewhere in the clouds at the time. People, I have some serious karma to set right.

I always do. And if I'm standing and no one gives up there seat, I ask someone who's sitting to give up there seat, they always do.

I do it all the time but the elderly usually decline the offer but it makes me feel good if one will take my seat.

Always do, like Ronstang said before, I give it up for any women. It would suck having to make a pregnant or not judgment call.
I just can't sit comfortably with ladies/elderly standing, I'm young, I can handle the standing.

In London, I loved the ends of cars where you could lean and half-sit against the window. Right by the door and nobody really wants that one since its pretty much standing.

I do not give up my seat ever! I do not take public transportation, so therefore if I gave up my seat, they would have a nice new car :(

I subsidize old people quite enough, thank you. They don't need me to hand them anything more.

As for pregnant women, well, they brought it on themselves. They get no sympathy from me.
