How does this work? Do you generally negotiate the temp salary(per hour) or do you wait until they hire you full time? By my logic, it's not a great idea trying to negotiate on my hourly rate as a temp because by doing so might hurt what leverage I have when I turn out better than expected. The argument being that I had already agreed upon a certain rate or had already negotiated once.
So basically the company I interviewed for urgently needs a replacement for one of their positions(a position that was previously held by a friend of mine who had resigned for good reasons and referred me as suitor) but there's a hiring freeze in place that would take some time to finalize a new hire. In order to work around that, they would hire me as a temp so I could start immediately and I would be upgraded to full time whenever. The hourly rate quoted to me is decent enough for a temp position that I'm not too concerned with(it's ok with me) but that rate when worked out to a salaried(thus exempt) rate is a bit of a paycut to my old job. I'm fairly certain from what I understand about the job description that I'm pretty well prepared to exceed expectations(it's an easy job) so I was thinking it best to negotiate later?
edit: Also, I was not hired through a temp agency either so there's no cut anywhere that they should conceivably pay in additional fees. I say conceivably because when given the offer by phone, I had talked to some rep that identified themself as someone from a staffing agency so I may have been passed on to one anyway for reasons beyond my understanding. I'm guessing they handle processing of new hires so I had to go through them but I don't know if they get any cut since they were not directly involved with recruiting me.
