Ok fellow DC'ers my school is dumping a bunch of old hardware because of upgrades and such. I have the opp to get my hands on at least 6 PCs. most are p2s and some Celerons from the same time period. I could also grab about 10 older Macs. older then G3s. now instead of watching these go to the scrap heap I figured they could crunch WUs for the TeAm. only prob is I don?t have the space to set up and run all of these. if anyone has the space to runs these and the money for the power bills LMK. ill see what I can get to you.

I have the space to set up 2 or 3 more... only problem is it would cost quite a bit to get them to me here in MI =) Go ahead and take them... definately don't let them go in the trash.
 
im planin on it. I also just discovered they are getting rid of a "SUN Sparc Station 5" which they say isnt that old. its got a huge monitor and what looks liek an external HD an 2 external CDroms and a 12 GB tape back up. im gonna take that also. anyone have any idea if its worth anything? i just want the monitor. is there an adapter for these things so you can hook them to a PC?

SETI on a Sparc sux! We have Ultra 60s that we tried it on and it was about like a PIII-450. For other things they are great!
 
Hmmmm... maybe to cut down on the cost, I could have you ship me the motherboard, CPU, and RAM... I have a couple empty cases with power supplies that should be able to handle a P2.
 
I would like some of the goods too. Are the Macs good at any DC projects? I can even pay for shipping. LMK

As for the Sparc Station 5, we have somehere at work. I think they have at least two processors, maybe even four. Iknow the HD's, CD drives, and tape drives have a very short limetime, and are expensive to replace. I could check on the specifics if you like.

We have a big SUN monitor hooked to a PC at work, it has a small adapter. Im sure you can find one somewhere. I dont think sparc station 5s are worth much, we had some of those at work too, there wasnt too much interest. Maybe you can use the parts from it....like SCSI drives. <oh man, i love SCSI drives>

 
What are the Mac? If you could give me the numbers off of them that would be great.

At work we have around 80 old 5500's sitting around just taking up space in storage. Kinda sad I really don't think they can produce enough to justify the cost of power!

 
they would either be comming out of Pa or Ny

im gonna keep one of them so i have a dedicated linux Box
