I really, really, really wish that one day we'll get a game with space battles in mind, but this time around the ships will be scaled with the actual canon information we have about them. I'm getting a little fed up with figurative and symbolic game-play and visuals to be honest, at least in the RTS genre. I'm a little tired to see a single X-Wing about as big as an Imperial Star Destroyer. I need battles with real-scale ships, and not just with two ships, but with hundreds of destroyers and frigates and corvettes, battling alongside hundreds upon hundreds of fighters going in all directions in full 3D space.
Let's think about a game like Empire: Total War but set in the Star Wars or even Star Trek universe... that my friends would be, for me at least, absolutely needed to reanimate those franchises. Until then I need to contempt myself with games like Empire at War. So to answer the question directly, no I don't really miss the older games touching that game-play ground, they were nice back then, I will never deny that, heck I used to play Tie Fighter a lot, maybe too much, but unless such new games are made in 2D then I say we need something more convincing if it's made in 3D, it needs to portray the said universes in grandeur, and I do believe that today's hardware can sustain such a demand given the engine is built with that in mind (if it was possible to get fully rendered polygonal 50,000+ troops in Rome: Total War years ago, I can't imagine what would be possible now).
