Anyone make custom laptops?

Anyone have experience making custom laptops like most people make home custom desktops? I need to know how difficult it is for a seasoned desktop builder (7 years experience) to build a laptop. Where can I buy the parts such as the laptop shell and specialized motherboards? Online tutorials for building laptops? Any info. will be appreciated.
 
You can get a barebones laptop (Shell, Mainboard, LCD, battery) and pick your own CDRW\DVD, CPU, Ram, MiniPCI, but you can do the same at Dell or Compaq or gateways website for less.

You cant mix and match shells and boards since lappys have no standard like ATX, it's all custom
 
Alienware is pretty good at making semi-custom notebooks. They offer a wide range of colors and components, all of which are good. They also offer upgrades in the future - you need to send your notebook in, buy the parts and they'll do the work for free, etc.

Not a bad option, as they'll upgrade literally any component, including the motherboard.
 
yeah, I figured there was no standard like ATX for laptops. The entire purpose of trying to do it myself was to do it super cheap, but o well. Guess it isn't possible.

Cheaper to buy them when they are on sale. Check the Hot Deals forum frequently.

 
wish you could build a laptop for as cheap (realatively to retail) as desktops. I can build a rockin' desktop for myself @ $300 AR... which I could do the same for laptop.

Yeah, each laptop model is specifically engineered to be as compact as reasonably possible, and it also needs to take into account the thermal output of each component so that adequate cooling is implemented as well.
