Anyone make candy apples?

I'm trying to make candy apples like the ones you get at fairs. Does anyone have a good receipe for them? I got some mix at a store and followed the directions but they didn't turn out too well, they never got hard enough, the coating stayed kind of soft and sticky. Is there a home made recipe that anyone knows about that makes good ones?
