Anyone Make a SATA Controller w/o RAID?

Seems like all the ones I have seen combine RAID and SATA. Is there such a thing as SATA w/o RAID?

You can also just run RAID cards without using the RAID features, using them as just normal controller cards (and/or using JBOD configurations to create larger logical drives).

Don't think it even matters. I've used the on-board SATA w/o the RAID. I had one IDE HDD and wanted to try the nifty little SATA cable. I see no point in looking for raid-less SATA controller.

Interesting responses. What I am trying to do is to get Windows XP to stop write caching my SATA drive - it causes random "Delayed Write Failed" errors. All of the Microsoft KB articles (there are two) do not hack it. The policies tab for this drive/controller is grayed out.

The one I currently used is built in to the ASUS P4PE mobo - a Promise controller with FastTrak BIOS. Am using a single drive as RAID 0 - its only a data drive, but it is starting to annoy me.

Are you sure the issue is with WinXP, and not a dying hard drive or unstable system? 'Delayed Write Failed' errors are almost always a problem with the drive on a physical level, or a sign of system instability.

yeah thats what I was thinking too. Are you sure its not a dying drive rather than the OS?

OK - that is good news. But, how? On my mobo, the only SATA controller is the RAID controller. With it disabled, the SATA drive is not seen at all.

When FastTrak comes up (the RAID/SATA BIOS) it has two choices to be functional - Raid0 and RAID1. RAID0 is the only choice for a single drive.

No, it is not a dying drive. It is brand new and has no problems. The Microsoft KB discusses the problem and it is here:

DWF

A normal solution for a "removable" drive that gets this error is to right click on it in My Computer, then Hardware, then Properties, then Policies, and uncheck Performance and check Quick Removal. That eliminates any possible delayed write action. But - Windows XP SP2 grays out the SATA drive's choices in this area.
