Anyone made their own "Bump Key"?

BTW, there's a similar situation for all the cars that have the electronic chips in them. Insurance companies act as if they are invulnerable, and if your car is stolen, often they wont accept your stolen car report. The chips aren't invulnerable, and often there are workarounds as well.

So, any suggestions for bump proof locks?

Why even worry about it? Locks only are a deterrent - if you have something and someone wants it they will sidestep your efforts - sometimes valiant, to get the goods. Get rid of the key altogether and go electronic or combination if you're overly paranoid. Also consider the installation of a video surveillance system.

Get a dog. Seriously... they are going to need to do something to shut the dog up... that will at least prove that they were there...

Monitored alarms also work. Expensive in the long run, but a fast call to the police 30 seconds after they enter the house doesn't give them much time to gather anything.
 
This is nothing new, picking locks via various methods has been around as long as there have been locks. This actually looks jsut as difficult if not more than raking a lock. I've never tried using a bomb key, but i've made a rake from a paperclip that could pick all the locks in my dorm, nothing hard, i read the MIT lockpicking guide and made a pick in 10 minutes. The thing you have to understand is that all security can be breached, especilly something as cheap and common as a normal lock.

As I said before, I want evidence someone has broken in. Bump keys dont leave that evidence. Lockpicking usually does leave evidence.

If someone wants to break into your house bad enough, all the security measures in the world wont stop them.

So I don't particularly care about additional deterants, or paranoid camera solutions. I just want to fix one problem, the problem of bump keys leaving no evidence someone has broken in.

Its bump key not bomb key. Its far easier than raking a lock.
You need to watch some of the videos out there on bump keys. If you have the time, find a video called whatthebump.wmv and watch it.
They are incredibly easy to create. And once created you can open all locks that accept that key blank. (For instance, in my neighborhood, all houses used one sub contractor with one style of locks. A single bump key could open all the houses in my upscale neighborhood).
One demonstration video a guy creates a bump key within about 2 minutes (includes filing time) and it works. As well, you dont even have to be particularly exact when filing, the hard metal of the lock itself will "correct" many deficiancies in the soft metal of the key when bumping.

Once you have the bump key it only takes a couple seconds to enter any door that will accept that key blank. If you go lockpicking a populated area you might very well be noticed and someone might call the cops. With a bump key since you are inside within a couple seconds (hardly more than the time it takes to normally open a door) its also unlikely that anyone would notice anything suspicious.

He inserts the bump key at about 1:25 and you can see how simple it is to use it.
In fact some of the people who do lockpicking as a hobby were saying it takes all the challenge out of thier hobby.
 
I couldn't get mine working. Shucks. I might try doing another one, but filing this one took me about 45 minutes, probably more. I've tried to fine tune it all i can, it's just not going to work. Can i just go to home depot or lowes and ask them to get a key to the maximum depth (all 9 cuts)? Will i get some shifty looks? 😛 - If i could do that then i could compare it to the bumpkey i made to see where i went wrong, then perhaps try to file down another key to match it. I think i could do it then.

Put a big rock in front of the door... or look for electronic lock systems...

Personally, I don't like being paranoid, because either way, if someone wants in bad enough, they'll find a way in, whether it's through the front door or whether they have to drive a truck through the wall.

A serious deadbolt and a security system will deter the average criminal better than a person would expect. Anyone willing to break post those isn't going to be stopped, AFAIC.

Seriously are you THAT f'ing dense? He isn't concerned with STOPPING people from stealing his crap but like most homeowners they want their insurance to cover the losses.

If someone breaks into your house with a bump key then you are just SOL. Your insurance will not cover you. There is no proof of a break in.

 
you could get some cameras and put them on your doors 😛. Actually, crappy webcames are so cheap now it might actually be affordable to do that.

there are a couple dogs that are for poeple that are allergic to them - poodles, bishons - they have hair and not fur - and poodles at least don't shed and are as alert as any other dog. they alert me, i do my part.
 
I can't seem to get a bump key made anywhere either. I tried Lowes, Wal Mart, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, asked if they could cut a key at maximum depth, and all of them looked at me like i was crazy. It's weird, i expected at least one place to be able to cut at depth levels (scale of 1 to 9). I never mentioned the words Bump Key, but one guy knew what i was trying to do and said he couldn't help me. I guess i'll just have to buy a bump key online somewhere.

As I've said at least 2 or 3 times in this thread... How many times do I have to repeat that I just want evidence that someone has broken in?
I dont care about deterrance, as I mentioned earlier, if anyone wants to break in, regardless of what you do, they will find a way.

Do you know of a decent lock that is bump proof thats not $250, or not?

After a quick google, I would say it depends.
The halLigan tool is more universal. But it definately leaves signs of opening lol. As for time taken for entry, I would guess its similar.
