Anyone lost a passport before?

What did u do? Did u call the cops to report it and then fill out the form here? Do they contact u afterwards or what?

Actually my friend wants to cancel a passport for his kid(long story) but it seems u can't cancel a passport once its been issued so he wants to get it invalidated...by reporting it lost/stolen. Any experience or help appreciated.

It's his kid's passport. He should just stash it wherever he stashes all the other papers the kid shouldn't have - deeds, titles, etc.

duh..i thought u would get it that the whole point is to cancel it to prevent some other(eg.spouse) peeps from bringing the child outta US...but not so obvious as to friggin burn the papers..

And the spouse etc. doesn't have access to the paperwork I mentioned, do they? Throwing it in a damn lockbox or safe deposit box at the bank is much easier than making a false criminal report.

Why the hell would you want to cancel a passport? In another year or so, if you want to go anywhere outside the US you'll need one, even just going to Canada.

Probably the best place to start looking for info is at state.gov
Either that, or take a pair of scissors to it.
