You can get around speaking only English (I find this fascinating, the only place in Asia?)

what do u mean by "the only place in asia"..there are other places in asia where you could get around speaking only in English.. please do not generalize... I apologize if i have misunderstood your statement...

Also, i have been to Hong Kong and i dont think you can get around speaking only in English.... u do need to know a little mandarin / cantonese to make things easier for yourself..

i think singapore uses english as their 1st language

true... Singapore, imo, has 4 official languages which include English, Malay, Tamil and Chinese ( probably mandarin )

Yeah, you need a little mandarin and English.
I managed to travel around in Hongkong with little mandarin and English when I was 13.
I remembered ordering 1/4 bbq chicken and they gave me the whole chicken instead :Q

I lived in HK for 2 years back when I was in high school, and visited once since then.

You can get around generally with english as long as you know where you want to go ... don't expect to be able to carry indepth conversations.

Using english will hinder how cheap things will be for you. For bargain prices, if they see you as a foreigner they will up the price because they know you have $$.

Food is usually cheap, but the cheap places are generally the places that do not understand too much english or have menus in english.

the black guy "don't take my chicken"

cab driver" okay okay"

cab driver:"chee seen" + drives off
