Anyone live in the San Jose, CA area?

what universities are around there? and what are rents like for 1 bedroom or studio apartments?

I've been thinking about asking my company for a transfer out there next summer, but there'd need to be a decent college in the area so I can start going to grad school part time, and I'd need to be able to afford at least decent living conditions 🙂

San Jose State University
Santa Clara University
Stanford University (30 minutes away)
UC Berkeley (other side of bay, hour drive)

I haven't checked rents lately, but I say they are around $1k for something decent in the 1 bedroom catagory.

If you are going to count berkely, you might as well count the universites in between, such as University of San Francisco, San Francisco State and UC San Francisco.

one bedroom apartment will probably run you... i'm thinking at least $1000/month.. all those schools listed are good ones around the area.. depends what you're planning to do your graduate work in.. san jose state is a good engineering school.. berkeley is good for most things cause of the name.. as is stanford.. san francisco state is good for business.. but i think anything further than stanford is probably too far.. so that really only leaves:

stanford
san jose state
santa clara university
that's about it for graduate work..

I live in Sunnyvale. Rents have come down. You can get 1 br for $850+.
If you want to do school part time, join a company that is member of Stanford Instructional Television Network. That way you can get a masters at Stanford and have the company pay for it. You basically watch the lectures on close circuit TV or online, and send in the homeworks. I am doing that, and most top companies in the valley are members.

wow 1 bed apt goes for 850 now?

when I was there it was at least 1200

if i went back to san jose, i'd go live with my parents. 😛

what kind of grad program are you looking for? as everyone has mentioned:

sjsu
stanford
santa clara

are the closest to san jose. if you wanna go further out, then there's USF, berkeley, SFSU.

rent varies depending on the neighborhood. my friend is living in redwood city in a studio for only 650. no dishwasher, basic amentities, probably not the nicest part of redwood city, but the landlord is an old lady that probably doesn't realize she can charge more for rent.

Average is around 900-1000 But you know there is a lot of variation. But the prices have come down a couple hundred at least, and a lot more from the boom times.
For comparison, when I came here in 2000, I rented 1 room in a house for $800. Then I rented a studio for $800, then 1br for $900. So prices have come down because people are buying real estate with low interest rate, so it's renter market.

San Jose State University
University of California, Santa Cruz
Stanford
Santa Clara

etc.

1 bedroom rents: approx $750-950. 1K would probably get you something really nice, I didn't even see any units priced that high. It pays to look a little though. I saw a lot of variation in neighborhoods and things for a given amount of money.

I pay $891 for a 1-bedroom in a decent complex in an excellent location. it's a good place to live, IMO. San Jose in general is a good "big" city to live in. i live here because it's centrally located to the places i need to be.
