I was in Korea over the summer (Seoul) and I went to one of the awesome tech stores there.

I remember seeing a really thin, light, and portable laptop there that had a swivel screen so it could be converted into a tablet laptop. The kicker was that it was only $800.

I don't remember the brand name though. The salesman said it was Japanese, but I had never heard of the name before in the States.

Anyone in South Korea and can think of some laptop brand names that we don't have in the States?

EDIT: It was Kohjinsha: http://www.kohjinsha.co.kr/

Probably one of the cheapest tablets are the gateways. You can get the 14inchers for 850 free shipping when they run a sale on their site. These are a true tablet, not the touch screen crap. I thought long and hard about getting one but I figured I wouldnt use it enough.

In regards to your question, I have no idea.

It's not anything like that. Fujitsu and LG we get in the States as well. It was literally a brand that I had NEVER heard of in the US. Heck, I didn't even know how to pronounce it when I saw it.

Could be one of those less well known brands. There were tons of those little guys offering better bang for buck in the LCD market from what I remember.
For your record, I plan on spending a month there over the winter break.

All I'm looking for at this point is a name so that I can look at their website and see what they've got. When I saw the laptop and the price it looked perfect... except there was only one shift key and it was on the right or something.

I saw it at one of those huge electronics marts:

http://pacrim.smugmug.com/gallery/2939137#158634399

Multi-storied. First story had tons of DSLRs and digital cameras. Second story was like computer parts. Third story was computers, laptops, big screen TVs, etc. Fourth story was appliances.

I could very well be very very wrong but I think the laptop brand might have started with a "K".

Looks like Technomart to me, not the best price-wise.
If you ask me, I would try my luck at Yongsan when it comes to computer parts / electronics.

Aha! I got it. Thanks so much for the tip.

It was Technomart. I found technomart's webpage:

http://www.tm21.com/store/new_...e=009&search_code1=060

Google translated the sucker.

Did a google search for the korean name brands + ???.

One of the results brought me to this page:

I noticed that the lappies looked VERY familiar.

Looked up ??????

Yup yup. It'd be a great little thing to do word processing on, some web browsing, e-book reading, jotting down notes, and a movie or two.

It looks like Vye Computers, a partner with Kohjinsha, is releasing a more powerful Intel-based version in the US:

http://www.dynamism.com/vye-s37/specs.shtml

Price is about $1300. Not bad for something this tiny with a touch screen.

The Kohjinsha SA1, which is the Geode-based one, goes for only about $900 in Korea with touch screen, but $1200 internationally :(.
