anyone live in or around silicon valley?

trying to get a feel for what rents are like in places within commuting distance to the main hubs, but it's hard searching craigslist when you don't know what towns/areas to be looking it.

just randomly toying with the idea of thinking about the feasibility of relocating to my company's west coast office.

Much more information is needed, but (depending on where you're coming from) rents are pretty high in most of the area.

(I live about 2 hours away, but worked in the bay area for many years.)

Expensive -

Expect $1200 for a 1bdrm for a mediocre apartment.

$900 for the hood

$1600 for luxry

If you need to live in San Francisco add $500 to each of those estimates.

What do you want in terms of a place to live? Life? Suburbia? Access to public transit?

office is in mountain view, presumably I'd be driving to work (single/no kids, so schools don't matter or anything but I'd want to be in an area where I don't worry about whether or not my car will still be there every morning)

Unless you have a good reason to not live near work, live in Mountain View, it's a nice city. Sunnyvale and Santa Clara are the two towns attached to it as you head south. As with any place, there's a dingy spot here and there.

To give you an idea of rent costs, I live in San Jose, in a 3br 2ba townhome, $1700/month.

These are in line with what I saw last summer when working in San Jose (next door to Mt View)

Locate the San Jose paper (see BoomerD's link below) and view the real estate rentals listed.
San Francisco will be close to an hour commute in from the North on the west side of the bay.
I would not recommend that on the east side of the bay, you look past Fremont/Union City. That will be an hour coming in.

Have a contact send you an apartment listing magazine (found at every store entrance).

I did notice mass transit - bus service. How extensive it is between cities????

I live in San Jose and rent is pretty high. What city (neighborhood is better because San Jose is large in area) is your office located at? I can give you a few recommendations based on traffic/quality of living/etc.

Ok I see the office is in Mountain View. I personally would look around the Santa Clara/North San Jose area all the way up the Pennisula to Redwood City.

Highway 101 (which sucks) will be your main road of travel most likely. Try to stay in Mountain View/Los Altos/Sunnyvale which will be close to your office (5-10 min drive) if you can. Those places are all nice to live at.

And Kansas is for....?

Most people who visit CA fall in love with either wine country, mountains, beach & sea, skiing, shopping, the weather, etc. You get my drift. Practically anything you want to do, it's available.

Do you know where in Mountain View your office would be? HWY 101 gets quite crowded north of Mountain View's Shoreline Blvd during rush hour, so if you're interested in a shorter commute I would look at Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and north San Jose.

Mtn View is nice overall. I've been looking at condos there (with no success.) You can also look at Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, or Redwood City (but really careful in RWC.) You can try Palo Alto or Menlo Park but it is a bit pricey in those areas.

San Jose could be done, but you'll be in traffic everyday.

Be careful of which side of 101 you look at in the Palto Alto area...East Palto Alto is not someplace I'd want to live. (it's da hood)

Palo Alto is a bit more fun of an area to live than Mountain View IMHO.

Is your office anywhere near the Caltrain stop? That would certainly open up your options.

idk, I hate Jersey.

we've been doing some business with the gov, so there's always rumors floating around about us opening a new data center in the DC area, but who knows what will come of it (and I've already come to the conclusion that there's no way in hell I could afford to live in London)

Something about that side of the freeway - apparently that side of the freeway in Menlo Park isn't hoity toity either.
