My wife and I are flying there next week on business (hers, not mine). I'm just going along for the ride. We'll be there from Tuesday - Sunday. Just curious what there is to do around there. I hear it's not too far from NYC. Any good, safe transportation besides renting a car? Any ideas on what to do?

I feel sorry for anybody who does. I'd think it would be bad enough having to live in New Jersey, but to have to live in a town called Parsippany too.
Owch.

Rent a car, but use it to get to the public transportation to take to NYC, if you go there. Don't drive to the city unless you love traffic silliness.

here's the official Parsippany website. Have fun!

AC isn't exactly near Parsippany. Sure, they might be able to take a bus or something, but doing something in NYC is a better idea.

There's a few bus lines that run through Parsippany to/from NYC. Lakeland Bus Lines is the one I see most and can think of their website offhand. It's about $5 or $6 each way.

You can catch a train to and from the city from a few of the towns around Parsippany. Depending on where in Parsippany you're staying, leaving from Boonton, Morris Plains, or Denville would probably be the closest. NJTransit.com for rail schedules.

Uh, no subway. :p

It's too long? You know how those North Carolinians are! :Q;):):D

Thanks tenchim. I will take a look at the website. BTW I am staying at the Embassy Suites on Parsippany Blvd.

Hopefully I can catch a bus from somewhere within walking distance from there to somewhere in NY. So where do I want to go? I want to be dropped off somewhere that's in walking distance to stores, etc.. Is there a certain drop-off location that I want to avoid?

Travel to Cap May or any other southern NJ shore. Other than that, NJ is a shite hole.

If you're staying at the Embassy Suites, then the Rt46 and Rt202 stop is a couple hundred feet from the front door. The section of Parsippany Blvd where the hotel sits is aka Rt202.

As for drop off points, almost all of the Lakeland lines that pass through Parsippany go to the port authority terminal in NYC, and from there you can catch a cab/subway/train/bus to just about anywhere in NYC and the surrounding areas. There is a line that goes to Wall Street, but it's only in the early mornings and only stops about 2-3 miles away from the hotel.

Someone in the city can probably give you more pointers about points of interest, bad places to avoid, etc. I'm not really a city person.

edit: looks like the bus fares went up since I last rode. $6.75. :(
edit2: I forgot there's a train station in Mountain Lakes. If there's a hotel shuttle you can take, it's about 2 miles NE from the hotel.

There are plenty of buses.

As I said, take a bus to Port Authority PA is in central Manhattan.

I lived in Hillsdale, NJ and I took the bus into NYC every weekend.

The woman who sits next to me on lab used to live there. She says that there is lots of shopping there and you can take the train into NYC.
