my conclusion is that all cities are basically the same, except for sports teams, and that people make the place...so if you can make friends (or drag them there with you) you'll be happy wherever

Your conclusion is incorrect.

Green Bay is only 3 hours away or so, going to a packers game can just be a day trip if you want, no need for an overnight stay.

Really?? If he's from Chicago, do you think this is such a great idea ;)

I'd start out by doing basic chemistry (titrating) and some regulatory work. But they're looking to grow the department rapidly, so who knows what I'd end up doing.

I live in La Crosse County, only about 1.5 hrs from Madison. I go to UW-La Crosse, kind of a mini-Madison. We are home to the largest six pack and proudly hold the record for the most bars per block in our downtown area. You can pretty much walk outside from one bar and be in another. I turn 21 tomorrow so I'll be feeling it hard on Sunday.

Madison is pretty cool, I'm hoping to get into Medical school there. Not only is it voted one of the best places it also gets ranked as one of the healthiest.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I live in downtown Chicago right now. I hate my current managers, but love the work. The new job would be in a completely different field - I'm not sure if I would like it.

The new job would pay a bit more. I've checked several on-line Cost of Living Calculators, and some say Madison is actually slightly more expensive than Chicago, while others say Madison is significantly cheaper than Chicago. I have no idea who to trust.

I'm going to try to find apartments online now...

I live in Janesville and go to school in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Great entertainment town. The city life is great.

I currently live in Madison. It's not a bad town. I'm originally from Oklahoma, so madison is an upgrade (except for the winters)

Like others said, living is all over the board. West side of Madison is pretty pricey to live and downtown is the same. The east and north sides are older so they are a little lower.. still sort of pricey though.
the south side of madison has a couple "bad" areas, so do your research

There is alot to do in Madison... and it has three lakes surrounding the town.. pretty nice.

There is not alot of diversity in Madison at a ALL. you have your pockets of diversity but overall, there isn't much.

I grew up in Madison and went to school at UW. Pretty much everything said so far rings true. The diversity is very low there but the natives aren't aware of it. Also, Chicago is viewed as Sodom so break it to folks slowly that that is where you are from.

You migh want to look around Monona, pretty nice area (yes, kinda pricey) and pretty close to where you work.
I used to lived in Fitchburg near Beltline (Fish Hatchery Rd). If commuting is ok with you and I am pretty sure it ain't as bad as Chi Town (ughh), then I would recommend my old apartment, Valley View. It has a nice lush garden, very quiet, affordable and pretty nice area. You only need to go East on Beltline and North on I90 to where you work.

Here is the link to the apt complex. http://www.valleyviewapts.com/amenities.htm
You will enjoy Madison.
