I hate people who use that generalizations like that.
He's a dumbass Canadian living in Alabama.....what kind of intellect did you expect?
And you're an uncultured American (who apparently hasn't even seen one of the US's best war movies) - what sense of humour did I expect? 😛

Hey I'm just joking too and am far from uncultured but when you post merely a quip which lots of people use without a disclaimer what are we supposed to think? 😉

thanks for the inputs all. Is it true Houston gets floods?

3 years ago, in Tropical storm allison, my house got 3 feet of water in it, but we had homeowners insurance and the government bought us a new house that was much better

BTW....stay the hell where yo are or go somewhere else as there are too many people here already.....why do you think it FLOODS HERE EVERY YEAR now....it is called too much buildup in too small an area with crappy civil engineers.

Yep, all that farmland expansion for the steers!!

My family moved from New Jersey to Houston several years ago.

Houston is one of the unhealthiest cities in the US. It is so hot here kids can not physically play outside for any amount of time. If the heat doesn?t kill you, the mosquitoes will. The weather is beautiful during the winter, which is the only time I am in Houston now (went to college in the NE US). In the summer, it is so hot and humid you will want death. A/C in every vehicle you own is the bare minimum. Also, don?t wear any black and have a good pair of sunglasses for driving.

Traffic is absolutely terrible. There are times when it takes 30 minutes to drive the 1.5 miles from my house to pick my mom up from work. There is not choice but to drive, because 59 is between the 2 places. The only OK part is that the speed limit is 70mph (on the freeway), which makes driving very early or late at night quick.

To be honest, I am horribly bored when I am at home. I live in Sugar Land, and the entire city shuts down at 10pm. All I really do is go to movies, and sometimes rent them. It takes way to long and is much too expensive to go downtown to do anything later than that. I do catch up on my sleep though. There don?t seem to be any 24 hour diners like up north where kids can do and hang out and drink coffee or whatever.

The air is absolutely despicable. I have pretty bad allergies, which are amplified to near unbearable levels. No problems when I'm at school.

All in all, I was not happy with the move from Jersey to Houston, mainly because of the weather. The people are absolutely awesome. I have made some of the best friends I?ve ever had down here, and we keep in touch even after graduating high school.

Good luck.

One year, I spent a summer down there for my job. It was really hot and humid all the time. The traffic is not as bad as Boston's. The cost of living may be lower. It has pretty good restaurants. People are reasonalbly friendly but a lot of them have guns. So if you move there I would tone down the rude east coast kamikaze method of driving.

Oh yeah, Houston has move good looking women walking around per capita than any where I have been.

Huh? Houston is the FATTEST city in the country and thus arguably the world!

No worries about the kamikaze method of driving, im 99% sure the city of Houston invented Road Rage.
As a mater of fact I rember last year two idiots acutaly started shooting at eachother while driving down I-45.

Yeah, that is my point about how important courteous driving is because of the number of Houstonians who keep guns in their cars..

I have never seen so many grotesque overgeneralizations in my life.

Houston is not a bad place to live. You would think that it was some God forsaken pit of hell like East St. Louis from what has been written here. Cost of living is low, and the winters here are awesome. 😀 You can afford to do far, far more here for less.

Cost of living may not be that crucial to many of you, since you are still sucking from your parents' tit. Austin is a lovely place to live, but jobs are not as plentiful there as they are here or Dallas.

For those of us who have to pay our own way through life, Houston is a terrific place. Nearly 4,000 sq. feet in a nice, suburban setting for under $250,000? That is unreal.

As far as air quality goes, air has improved recently. I believed that LA recaptured its lead in poor air quality recently, if I am not mistaken. With light rail going in left and right, transportation will get much better.

Highways are being expanded to alleviate traffic problems as well. As a survivor of "The Big Dig," this should be no big deal. It really only affects West Houston.

As far as flooding goes, we have had out fair share of that in the last few years, but that is a recent phenomenon.

heh. I was born in Houston, and my Dad regales me with stories of people brandishing guns on the highway. Apparently it was quite common in the 80's, I hope its toned down a bit by now, as I will be there next year.

Here is a note: Dallas isn't any cooler than Houston. My grandparents live there and I usually spend one week every year down there, usually during the summer, and its temps can outpace Houston's easily . . . but Dallas isn't on a coast, so the humidity doesn't rise to the insane levels common in Houston. I'm sure that I won't need to actually DRINK anything except once in a while while I'm in Houston. I'll get my water requirements just by breathing.

It really isn't a bad city to be in. It isn't clean, but neither is the city I'm in now. And the economy down there is booming. It took a dive in the 80's, but its back in force now. Great job market (or so I am told).

As a person who leans left in the political spectrum, I'm sure I'll have a fun time . . .but I will also be on a college campus (which are nearly ALL liberal) that I know isn't hardcore right because when I went down there to interview it was "National Coming Out Day" complete with multiple tables handing out raindow and purple triangle pins to anyone who wanted one. I'm not really hardcore left, but I'm sure I will fit in.

And I plan to take Rice's bus system everywhere. . . it goes downtown and all around the campus. I will probably buy a car in my Sophomore or Junior years, and I will make sure that its airconditioner is capable of freezing water five seconds after you switch it on .. .. when the car is black and has been in the direct, August sun of the worst Houston day ever conceived in the depths of Hell.

You could do worse finding a place to live. Its a major tech and medical center.

My brother in law lives in Houston....for that very reason I would stay away...otherwise it's a horrible town...move to Hawaii...

So you came out in Houston? 🙂

It's freakin' 76 degrees on Dec. 29th. WTF!?

The traffic builds up early and ends late and stretches for miles beyond miles.

It's nasty hot/humid in the summer. Once you step out, it's like you're swimming.

The air is gross...one of the worst (if not THE worst) polluted cities.

Everything is 30-45min away from anything. If you wanted to visit a friend, 30-45 min drive. Go out to anywhere 30-45min. It's just so big that everything is far from everything.

Are house so cheap there due to the low cost of Real Estate or Building Costs?

Both substantially reduce the cost of housing: Cheap labor as well as abundant land. Houston, IMO, errored when they basically allowed the city to sprawl out as far as the buyers would allow. Dallas isn't quite as bad, though. Austin refuses to abandon the 'urban center' type planning, and as a result you can basically drive through austin in 10 minutes.

As I've said in this thread, it's an example of urban sprawl goes wrong.

bah, i don't like hot wheather. Guess we will have to look at other states with lower costs of living...suggestions are welcome.
