Wow, 2 people on AT from North Pole.. that is.. strange.
That's like 1/4th of the population up there, isn't it?
On a more serious note, I seriously do want to live in Alaska for at least a few years of my life.
Is it true that they pay you 2000$/year just to live up there?![]()

First, yes, they do pay us to be Alaskan residents. It's oil profits and they equally split part of it for Alaskan citizens. This years was deposited today amazingly enough... it was $1,107.71. It has been upto $2k in previous years.
Two, the weather is tough. We can get as hot as 95F to -65F in the winter... matter of fact, Fairbanks has the distinction as being the city with the widest temp. range in the world. This year, we are having a WEIRD year... it's still 65F outside. Usually we have 1ft of snow and it's 10F by now... we are breaking all kinds of records on a daily basis. The past few years we have had almost no snow at only 1 or 2 feets, that is compared to our usual 6-8ft.
Third, I have gone to UAF for the past 3 years and it's great. Amazingly enough we have a great educational institution here. Our supercomputer center is on the top500 list in the world, we have 4-5 cray SC now. Of course, our resource management and other sciences are very strong too. Tuition is cheap for residents, around $250-300 for a 3 credit ungraduate class.
I will probably move when I graduate, but I've stopped going fulltime, so who knows when that will be at this point.
Joe
btw: We have broadband, Home Depot, Walmart (in 3 months), Subway, Burger King, McDs, Pizza hut, Dominos, etc.
I really can't stand penguin jokes! Ohhhh and we We don't have penguins outside our igloos! They live in our bathtubs... DUH!
I still say go up there and check it out if/when you can. Just because it's not for him doesen't mean it won't be for you, plus you can always live off campus.Originally posted by: Excelsior

Shotgunsteve had this to say:
"I am currently taking classes through UAF (not living on Campus, thank Gawd) and I would say look elsewhere. Despite all the positives, you do NOT want to be living on campus right now. When they should have been expanding housing and dorms, they were demolishing them. Right now they have beds in the common rooms of the dorms, since there is not enough housing for students. How would you like having in and out traffic for the dorm going through your bedroom?
Add in the fact that tuition just jumped this semester, and they are planning to hike it again each year for the next few years. I suspect Gray Davis is moonlighting as the University chancellor."
Eh..not so sure anymore about UAF.![]()

Damn.. At Fairbanks/Eielson AFB, the all time record high for October is 68F, on the 13th, 1969.
For October average high is 30F, and average low is 16F. :Q
Average high in the warmest month(Jul) is only 72F. :Q But the record is 92F.
I think I would like to go there because it has much of the same qualities as Oregon.. just magnified 50x.Originally posted by: Excelsior

Crazy isn't it? Also, another reason Id like to "get away" when I go to college is that Ive been here all of my life. Id like to "take a vacation" in the process of going to college.
