Can anyone recommed a nice, inexpensive hotel close to downtown Chicago??

I'm not too familiar w/ the area, so Priceline and Travelocity don't really help....

I live in the burbs of Chicago, and a bunch of people who work with me come in from out of town. There really are no nice and inexpensive hotels in the loop area(downtown Chicago). Even some of the nicer hotels are crappy from what I hear. Also, what is your idea of inexpensive? I think you might be able to get a room somewhere for maybe $100-$150 bucks, but I'm not really sure.

Is there a location that's close to the Loop, but maybe a bit outside?

I stayed someplace in the theater district once, really artsy fartsy looking but it was cheap. Can't remember the name of the hotel (L-something, maybe "Luna"?) but it was really swanky inside with a 'lively' art deco theme.

EDIT: It was the Hotel Allegro. Yeah its in the loop too. More info to be found here. It looks expensive, but Travelocity hooked me up when I stayed there midweek last October.

You can also look up hotel rates here: www.orbitz.com.

edit: orbitz lists the Fairmont at $260/night but for some reason I recall it being ~$180/night less than two years ago... maybe it is a seasonal thing.

The Allegro is listed as $190/night.

I did the same search you need... We ended up going with the Hyatt on Printers Row. Nice place and was $80/night thru hyatt.com --> internet specials. Make sure you understand that travelocity/expedia does not always give you a better deal than hotel sites themselves. I found this out after extensive research.

Check all the Hyatts there in Chicago, but the one on "Printer's Row" was walking distance from downtown. Besides, trains are easy enough to take there too... very good experience overall.

Try for the tremont hotel. Nice little place next to the mike ditka restraunt on east chestnut, a block away from the hancock building. I got a room for $80 over the net.

Tried the Hyatt, but no deals :(

I ended up at the Millennium Knickerbocker for $84/night via Hotwire.com.

Anyone know if this is a nice place? It said 4 out of 5 stars at Hotwire.com.

I don't recall hearing the name before.

The location's pretty prime. Looks like it's a half block away from the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave). I'd guess it's about a 20-minute walk from the north side of the Loop. It should cost you around $5-$7 by taxi to get from the Knickerbocker to just about anywhere in the Loop area, depending on traffic.

Knickerbocker is in the south loop. Not much to do around there. You didn't say what you would be doing in Chicago (work, pleasure, etc.) or what you wanted to be close to. I would've suggested the north side of the city rather than the south side, but cabs shouldn't be a big deal.

Post how close you want to be to what and I'll give you some more suggestions. There are a number of cute little hotels in the Gold Coast for 100-150. There's a Days Inn by Lincoln Park zoo for about 90.

Just need more info to help you out.

There are no inexpesive hotels downtown.

Try searching (expedia and orbitz) for hotels near Midway and Ohare and sort by price. You should be able to find something for about 70 bucks.

Knickerbocker is in the south loop.

Based on the address I found using Yahoo and Millenium Hotels:

163 E. Walton Place @ N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 751-8100

I beg to differ. This is at the North end of Michigan Avenue (Gold Coast area), which is nowhere near the South Loop. map

Maybe there's another Knickerbocker?

If this hotel is, indeed, the one you got for $84/night, then I'd say you got a pretty good deal. Check out the John Hancock Observation deck for a good view of the city. It's pretty close to the hotel.
