Anyone Listen to Blues Music?

I'm taking a popular music class and an assignment has come up to take 5 blues songs that are meaningful and important in the American experience... I'm just curious if anyone can list some blues songs that may be put into this category... Just a list of songs would help a lot as I'm not a big blues listener so I don't know much about it... I'll look up the songs and lyrics and what not, if anyone could provide just the artist and song that you think would fall into the 'american experience' category...

An example the professor has given us is: Nina Simone?s ?Strange Fruit? (Four Women: The Nina Simone Phillips Recordings) and ?Four Women? (The Diva Series) tell us something important about being black and a woman in the American South. Janis Joplin?s songs told us about what it was like to be a girl who wasn?t going to be a cheerleader or asked to the prom, although none of her songs were about those things?and that has something important to do with life in America.

I just want to make it clear i'm not asking anyone to do any of my assignment, just need a list of blues songs.

Thanks,

heh. strange fruit was the first thing I thought of... too bad that's out. I saw a great documentary in a college music class about when she sang the song down South.

check out some Bo Diddley.

these are the songs in the genre blues on my ipod:

Pick a Bale of Cotton - Leadbelly
Alabama Bound - Leadbelly
The Thrill is Gone - BB King
Phone Booth - Robert Cray
Pride and Joy - SRV
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood
Smoking Gun - Robert Cray
Albert's Shuffle - Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills
Really - Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills
Born Under a Bad Sign - The Butterfield Blues Band

some of those those should be a good starting point.
