anyone let STEAM manage updates?

I am curious, I just noticed this feature, does anyone use it? Does it work well, is it quick to see updates?

to clarify, I meant GPU updates, haha.

I do use steam for graphics drivers. It makes it easy for me to click "update video drivers" every time I hear about a new release. I play the latest games usually and it helps to have recent drivers.

If you have a Steam game it updates as soon as the update is available through Steam. You can only update once the update has been posted to Steam. You can turn auto-updating off, but you can't get the update any quicker than the auto-updater already would.

Constantly updating video card drivers isnt always a good idea.
It depends. If you have the latest series GPU and you play the latest games, it certainly is important to update to the latest WHQLs.

i am finishing up my 80-game evaluation of 3D Vision and i often needed to use betas to get the best out of a game; for example SSF-IV arcade edition is only "fair" with the latest GeForce 275.33 but "3D Vision Ready" with R289.19s. There is no comparison 😛

You can also allow Nvidia to update your drivers and check for the latest betas every five minutes in the nV Control Panel.
:colbert:

After i have patched Steam, i always break the cloud synch and go offline. No Auto updates because they can interfere with benching results. i am getting a new AMD card to review this week and there has to be consistency through all of the benches. After the benching is done, i allow Steam to Auto-updates my games again.

Oh. This about Steam updating graphics drivers, not games. My mistake.

The answer is no, I don't. I get my drivers straight from AMD's website. AMD's drivers has its own automatic updating tool now so I don't see why anyone would use Steam.

So what is the new card?!?!?!

A passively cooled Gigabyte HD 6770.
- i think it would be great for light gaming and HTPC
(that was my first choice out of a bunch of 6770s and 6790s)

not necessarily - the OP asked us about letting Steam "manage updates"

i let it update games when i want it to; i never allow it to update drivers as AMD and Nvidia have their own auto-update feature
