Internet data centers are BIG warehouse type facilities with backbones (LOTS of them) piped in for servers (LOTS of them). They are temperature controlled and monitored 24/7.

They are several new ones under consideration here where I live, and the power consumption numbers are staggering; as much as 25% of the grid for the entire county (population 1.5 million) for the four centers being developed. About 40% of that consumption is for the temp control.

They are REALLY cool. Rows and rows and rows of rack mount servers, multiple monitoring stations, alarm systems, HVAC in the floor and ceiling. Cables everywhere.

Here's a diagram of one.

Geek Heaven.

Content Networks, hmmm, I thought they were huge caching systems, hosting files for other sites, like Amazon.com has another company which caches it's site and has amazon.com redirect to them.

me and russ are probably talking about the same thing tho :)

IDC = large secure physical area devoted to housing and monitoring internet servers. Most of the time companies lease a space within them that contains a locked cage and necessary power, environment, network.

Content Networks = Infrastucutre setup and designed to deliver content (caching, audio, video). Really just big cache servers spread over the US and international.
