Anyone knowledgable about home electrical wiring???

The bathroom in our bedroom has no fan/vent other than the window to the outside. get's pretty steamy in there during showers and the ceiling above the shower is starting to show mold :Q

Here's my idea. Rather than buy a ceiling vent and having to deal with climing in the ceiling crawlspace, wiring the fan, doing duct work etc. I thought about buying 1 or 2 120mm fans. Mounting them in some sort of box or so. And wiring it to a cord for a light/lamp with the inline roller switch and plugging directly in to a wall socket. Figure two 120mm fans would move anywhere from 150-200 CFM and would help ventilate the room during showers (or, um, other stuff 😉). Now I guess my question is regarding the home voltage and wether or not it would fry the fans. Would I be able to just direct wire it that way? Or would I need to buy a cheapie PSU to plug the fans in to?

I realize i'm trying to be a bit more creative with this than needed, but I thought it'd be kewl to have a couple big azz Sunon's spinnin' on the window sill. Who knows? Maybe i'd even throw some flashing LED's on there!!! 😀😛

I don't know about the electrical issue but I don't think that those fans would be able to efficiently draw that much humid air out of the room. Where would the air go?

Spend a Saturday and run the ductwork.... You'll get extra light for the bathroom and be much better off in the long run, and probably much happier with the results.

Even better yet - hire a neighbor kid to crawl in the attic for you. I used to be my uncle's slut when I worked for him (he is an electrician) and I always got stuck doing the long runs through the trusses and pulling ductwork to the bathroom fan locations.

All home outlets will be 120 volts. Why would you be worried about frying a fan? Why would a power supply that plugs into an outlet help? Maybe you are concerned with a lightning strike?

Motors draw a higher amount of amps though, but if you go over the breaker limit on that circuit it will ideally blow without any harm done.

I swear this plan sounds like an entry for a future Darwin Award contender. Don't jury-rig electrical devices in your bathroom, particularly when you have a layman's understanding of electricity and wiring.

This seems more like a temporary fix than a permanent solution. Do you own this house or is this a rental/apartment? It would be worth the effort to me to do it right in my home. You can also buy fans that fit into windows at target or walmart.

Another thought is would the cord come near the shower or run across where people step? If so it could be a big safety hazard.

So true. Plus, 120mm computer fans are 12v DC. your wall puts out 120v AC. they are not compatable in any way. Buy a ventilation fan and do it right.

Wait, we are talking about computer fans? Yes, please don't try wiring that to your home outlet.

asking if he needs a power supply pretty much points that out dontcha think?

lol! It was just an idea! sheesh! Yes, I own the home, the air would go out the window, the outlet is on the same wall as the window. it's a VERY SMALL bathroom (3/4 bath). Between work and the wife due to pop any day now, really don't have the time to be doing any home projects. I just figured I'd throw together a little fan box so set on the window sill during/after showers or taking a dump! No big deal guys!

It's just that they all love you and don't want to see any harm come to you.

Well maybe not, but good luck to you anyway.

if that is what you are doing, buy a $20 window fan from Home Depot or Lowes. Hell, they are probably on clearance now too.

I have in my hands - 2 120mm 120VAC "computer fans" 😉 They aren't that hard to find - just go to your local electrical supply store and they'll be able to order them if they don't stock any. Electrical supply stores do NOT include Walmart, Menards, HomeDepot, Lowes 😛

Yeah - do that - these fans I mentioned are ~$15 each 😉 so you'd be better off getting a "real" fan 🙂

Yeah, I just thought it'd be kind of fun to put something together. Something temporary till I can put in a light/fan unit over the shower. Guess I'll just stop showering instead 😱😕:Q😀😉

I don't know about your situation (any other kids) but my wife and I just shower with the door open. No mold problems, no need for a fan to blow all your heated/air conditioned air right outside. Plus there is a benefit of walking by the bathroom...

Yeah, problem is, it's a fairly old house (circa 1977) and the windows are the old aluminum frame double pane jobbies. good back in their day, but crap now. When we leave the door open, A LOT of condensation gathers up on the window in the bedroom. I might just try and hit wally's up for a in-window fan thingie. It's a fairly small window tho, so will have to see what is available.

Oh and yes, a 3 1/2 year old "Stegosaurus/Triceratops/T-Rex" is constantly terrorizing our home 😉"

No offense intended codeyf..

But this idea comes from a true computer geek.. (and thats not a bad thing mind you)

Take old computer parts to solve minor household delimas.
Awesome idea if you ask me.. but the others are right.. it wont work and its an accident waiting to happen.
