Anyone know why this lake in Iraq is blood red?

I was reading through this article of strange google earth finds, and this came up. Anyone know why it's red like that?

Insane mineral deposits/spill?

Also, it IS Iraq. The military might have been conducting an op involving that lake, and didn't want the details in the images.

Ah, I think you might be on to something. This quote..

would explain why there are some ponds, and some semi dried up areas surrounding them.

Also, this quote..

would explain why that one is red while the others are pretty much the same color. They could just be on different time cycles..
