Anyone know who invented chewing gum?

What a great idea! It just came to my mind. Who would've thought about chewing a piece of rubber?

I'd say the forest people long time ago who were tapping rubber from gum tree and accidentally got a mouthful of it.

Actually, modern chewing gum comes from the Mayans, at least I think it does. My wife and I were in Tulum, Mexico (old Mayan city on the coast near Cozumel) last year, and we were told that the yucca plant was used in making a gum for chewing. The original Chicklets gum came from the yucca plant until they substituted artificial ingredients for yucca.
